Normally fresh water fish however now live on the North East coast and found some old kit for sea fishing. As a result intend to try a bit of mackerel and any other species of fishing on the Whitley (not Whitby) Bay coast. Shore fishing that is. Any tips?

  1. You will get cod off whitley beach in the winter. A storm (any north easterly wind) will chop the sea up, causing heavy waves to crash on the shore. This dislodges crab, worm, razor fish etc (ie, bait) and the fish come in close to feed. Winter and definatly night time are the best times to fish. Grip leads and big hooks are a must, and warm, waterproof clothes will keep hypothermia at bay. Take care and tight lines!!

  2. Or call in at Morrison's Monkseaton. They've got all kinds of fishes there. Save yerself some hassle and cut out the middleman.

  3. try ragworm or peeler crab from your local bait and tackle shop, get a bit of squid too.

you can spin for things like mackerel, bass, pollack etcetera, just ask for some feathers or a toby.

    hope that helps

    cheers

  4. very good mark is St Mary,s lighthouse, especially for cod

very rocky and weedy so be prepared to lose some gear. best bet is to go down at low tide and look for the gullies.

Frasers tackle shop in Ocean View will have all the gear you need and will give you all the help as regards other marks.

    try the website ....www.worldseafishing.com

on the top toolbar is a forums section. scroll down to the north east and ask your question on there. this is a website just for the fishing lads and they are really helpful
