  1. Yes fine!

  2. One beer?  No need to wait at all.  Only about 2% of the alcohol in your blood will get to your milk...and your body metabolizes about 1 drink an hour... so less than 2% will end up in your milk.

No need to pump and dump at all unless it's to relieve engorgement while you're still intoxicated.  Your body will clear any alcohol out of your milk just like it does with your blood.  It doesn't get "trapped" in your breastmilk.  I'm not bashing the answerer who said to pump and dump "just in case" and then went on to claim that she had some midwife training- but its information like that that makes mothers shy away from nursing.  Please become properly educated.

  3. I sometimes drink a beer while nursing my son.

    It's totally fine.

If you can legally drive, you can safely breastfeed.

No need to pump & dump

    God Bless

    Breastfeeding and Alcohol

    By Kelly Bonyata, IBCLC

    Guidelines

        * Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”

        * Many experts recommend against drinking more than 1-2 drinks per week.

        * It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002).

        * There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk.

        * Alcohol does not increase milk production, and has been shown to inhibit let-down and decrease milk production (see below).

        * If you're away from your baby, try to pump as often as baby usually nurses (this is to maintain milk supply, not because of the alcohol). At the very least, pump or hand express whenever you feel uncomfortably full - this will help you to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis.

In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.

Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.

  5. Wait and hour or so, then you can breastfeed again. Pump and dump is a waste of time and milk. The alcohol will leave your breast milk as it leaves your blood.

  6. id say a day.... 24 hrs should be good to get the alcohol out of your system.

  7. For most people, the amount of time needed to metabolize one drink is about one hour (varies a bit for weight and liver function).  Alcohol is metabolized from breast milk at the same rate as from blood.  One drink is defined as 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1 oz of hard liquor.  Peak alcohol levels are reached about 60-90 minutes after consumption.    There is no need to pump and dump your breast milk except to relieve engorgement or to maintain supply.  So, assuming you had a 12 oz beer you were okay to nurse again about 2 hours after you started drinking, if you drank a pint it would have been about 2.5 hours.

  8. One beer? Your good to go anytime. That is a very small amount of alcohol that will be in your breast milk. The general rule of thumb is sober enough to drive, sober enough to breastfeeding.

  9. you can pump within an hour after having the beer (it takes 1 hour for body to fully process 1 "drink" of alcohol). Pump and dump that milk. You should be FINE for the next feeding. How long has it been since you nursed your baby???

Meant to add - there is contoversy about pump&dump approach, but it is the safest way to ensure baby is getting no alcohol. Your body will restore your milk supply almost immediately.

  10. Since I doubt anybody here is a medical doctor(those suggesting not waiting), I would suggest waiting 1-2 hours.

  11. you can breastfeed between 2-3 hours after  a single drink, esp one with low alcohol such as beer. anything harder maybe 4 hrs. to keep your milk supply up, pump and "dump".

EDIT: to the person below me, there is no such thing as a "waste of breast milk" it's not store bought, it always replenishes itself and pumping is a good way to keep your supply up if youre going to take a breather from nursing. That milk would be dumped bc it is no good during that time.

  12. About 2 hours (per unit). By then your liver has broken down the alcohol in your bloodstream.

  13. It's best to wait a couple hours, but as long as it was just one drink you don't need to worry.  A general rule of thumb is that if you can drive, you can breastfeed.

  14. oh gosh -- you didn't need to wait for just one beer. totally okay. :)
