Who, or what job, on a ship is known as the Captains Tiger and why is he called 'Tiger' ?

  1. He is the captain's valet or pantry man.


  2. The Personal Servant to the Captain.  Not entirely sure why he is called that though.

  3. Glorified personal servant to the captain. The origin may well come from a captain's habit of dressing his flunky in a striped jacket, just as "blazer" comes from the captain of HMS Blazer dressing his boat crew in those jackets.  In those days a captain with money would show it off by dressing up his men; there was very little in the way of uniform for the lower ranks.

  4. The Captain's tiger was a refrence to the Captains personal steward on a passenger ship.  He would act as a sort of gatekeeper to the Captain as well as looking after his personal needs

  5. Is it the ships cat?
