Who're the Voices of Today's Generation?

Watching Stevie Wonder on tv right now & it made me think.

All of us here already know the names of pop's past who spoke to their respective generations.

The last one I can remember for rock though is Nirvana/Cobain. For R&HH, I believe that might be Tupac. (generally speaking for each decade, of course)

But since the end of the 90s, I don't think there's been a unifying voice or voices for the current generation. There've been *Many* voices. All from various genres of popular music.

Too many, I think. So many to the point that I'm not too sure which ones stand out. So I guess this is directed to the young people here.

Who do you think are your musical voices? Ones that you think we'll look back & use that cliche "...spoke to a generation"

Or maybe you Don't think there're really any & that it's more an entire genre that speaks to you & not necessarily *A* band or artist?

  1. ok, urban youth of today-  definitely Jay-Z or Nas.

Suburban youth- definitely someone like Bono (as absolutely pretentious as he is.. he is the biggest activist/humanitarian around) or even younger generation- maybe Green Day (billy joe) or "gasp" John Mayer even tho he sucks at life.

  2. i truly believe that Lil Wayne is speaking out for us.

  3. I think both Nas and Lupe Fiasco are very positive man in hip hop. Bono from U2 for rock he does a lot of positive things for the world.

Alicia Keys is beyond positive in her image and the quality of music she releases.

But for myself I don't really look up to celebrities as rolemodels but I admire them for their talent or good things they do, I'm 22.

  4. I would say that Alicia Keys or for a RHH artist, Nas would be the people that I would say are the voices of our generation, because of the power, relevance and soul they put in their music.

  5. It's kind of hard to do that today because music (not just rap, all genres) is about the record label's bottom line. Money talks and being an influential speaker in music doesn't sell as well as cliched lyrics about cars and ice and a funky dance does.

I guess I might say Kanye. To me Chamillionaire speaks more real talk (about life, doing well, family, etc...) than anyone but I don't think, in 30 years, we'll look back and remember either of these two.

  6. I think the voice for this generation is Jay-Z...he is a great rapper & he has large fan base & when you speak on popularity & skills no one stands out like Jay-Z

Don't hate on me Nas fans, he's good but the younger generation isn't feeling him like Jigga

I think when we look back on the 2000's we will think Jay-Z

  7. I fear for this generation,so little to chose from.not like the Beatles of 60'sSabbath andZeppelin of the 70's etc.I thought I would give you guys a heads up on what I found out on this question earlier.I am sorry for posting it

  8. Kanye I guess because he gets love from everybody and in order for that cliche to be used, the person must get respect all around.

  9. I weep for hip hop. That is all I have to say.
