I only have one friend who's religious. Well he's not really because he doesn't go to church and he doesn't even talk about it.

Once though he said he would ask St Peter to let me in heaven, but I just said there wasn't a heaven and that was the end of the conversation.

Anyway who is St Peter?

  1. Peter was one of Jesus' disciples.

He really is not Heaven's Gate Keeper....that's just a story

  2. Peter, also known as the Big Fisherman, was a Galilean. Brother of Andrew. Andrew was a follower of John the Baptist. When Jesus was baptized by John, John sent Andrew to follow Jesus and Andrew invited Peter along. At that time Peter was known as Simon bar Jonah.

During a rest stop Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" And they answered that He was John come back to life, or Elijah or one of the prophets. Then Jesus asked them, "Who do YOU say that I am?" And they looked at one another. But Simon stood and proclaimed, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!" And Jesus changed Simon's name to Cephas, which is Aramaic for Peter, which is Latin for "rock" and set Peter up as head of His chruch on earth. He gave Peter the keys of the kingdom and His own authority and promised that God would back him up when he used it.

It wasn't much of a stretch to go from that to gatekeeper.

I seriously doubt that there are "Pearly Gates" or that Peter is standing there with his keys and a veto as to who can enter. But I AM hopeful that he is seated near to his Lord and that they're chewing the fat, knocking back Cinzanos, reliving the good old days and generally having a blast. Creation IS a party!
