Lots to do in Costa Rica..

Once  you've arrived in C.R.....Getting to the destination can prove a little tricky and dangerous..I agree with Michael on the traffic, and safety issues....so beware! Never rent a car, only a 4x4 to get around, or your car will be swallowed up by a pot hole!

These are the things I loved to do there...

Spend the day at the Poas Water Falls...

Poas Volcano-Poas Volcano Lodge is a great place to stay and they make awesome meals for you!

Arenal Volcano is super cool and staying at the Hotel Del Silencio Del Campo made  our stay complete...You can go to their private hot springs if you stay at their hotel...Be careful walking at the hot springs..I fell and tore my rotator cuff...they have great medics (lol)...

San Ramon was one of the nicest of the cities...

Uvita is a dirty, scary place..

Dominical (the road seems like the road to  h**l) Once there it's got fantastic views....La Mariposa is a good hotel to stay at because of their awesome view...Biblica was also another good hotel although they ran out of water!...They make good pizza there, and if you buy a pizza you can swim in their pool....New spin on Pizza and Pool, eh?

La Playa Grande was my fav. beach....HOT but beautiful.....

My most favorite place is a village(vegetarian)that owns the world's longest zip-lines...called "Lands In Love"...

You have to go try the zips (San Lorenzo Forest)...stay there for a relaxing and gourmet veggie meal...Really cool....

That is about all I enjoyed.........

Stay away from the Trapp Family Lodge....NOT WORTH IT, and that whole area CALLED MONTEVERDE is depressing!!

I have been to Costa RIca at least 15 times in the last 12 years. It is a beautiful country. However:

*Fly into Liberia, not San Jose (a dirty, dangerous, confusing town with desperate people looking to steal your money to buy drugs). Stay at El Sitio in Liberia your first night off the plane and set out-by bus (stops right outside the hotel) in the morning. It is quite safe in the country side. The bus is a nice way to see the country and has a good reliable schedule.

*Guanacaste is the best area, that is, the north western coast. There you can enjoy fishing, surfing, view the turtles nesting and laying their eggs at the full moon, 4-wheeler rides thru the jungle, nice cheap accomodations and much more. Flamingo Beach and Nosara are the two areas that I like the best. Stay out of Tamarindo-its like San Jose, only smaller.

*There are some active volcanoes and natural hot springs in the mountains(like Arenal, for instance). Quite spectacular.

* The beaches are clean and mostly deserted. The roads are really bad and don't have many signs. The people are friendly and non-confrontational. They love American money, but your change will be in Colones. Don't worry you can pay for stuff with U.S. bucks and Colones combined. Most people are honest and will  not cheat you.

*If you want excitement, go to Jaco(down south western coast). Unfortunately, its a party town with all the bad and good that goes with party towns.

I've been there and all I can tell you is that Costa Rica is a wonderful country. It's safe, clean and please enjoy it! San Jose is a pretty big city but the best is Heredia.

I went a long time ago but it was fun. The Museo del Oro is really impressive, there is a collection of artifacts made of pure gold. Also I went white water rafting. It was quite an experience, I'd love to go there again just to go back to the rapids. If you surf the Pacific coast has many beaches that are awesome for that. Also, there is an active volcano. It's either the Poas or the Arenal, I can't remember. When I was there, the top was visible and we actually saw a "small" explosion. It was really impressive (and a little frightening). Enjoy your trip. If you drink beer, try Imperial, it's pretty good.

I just got back! It's a great country:

-San Jose: went to school for intensive Spanish (Costa Rican Language Academy-GREAT School), visited the Teatro Nacional and Museo del Oro; Salsa dancing at Castro's nightclub, etc.

-Volcano Poas: during rainy season, won't see much of the crater most days;

-Cascada Paz + parque nacional: BEST site to see tropical birds, frogs, butterflies in one place (sort of like an open-air biodome); gorgeous rainforest visit to the three falls;

-Boat ride on the Rio Sarapiqui: not much to see right now because of the rain (water is too high); did see some monkeys, birds, iguanas (crocs were hiding)

-Isla Tortuga: a tourist site but absolutely beautiful; you can get a boat trip here RT with 1/2 day snorkeling and grilled lunch for $35 (cocozuma tours)

-Playa Montezuma: has beautiful sunsets but riptide is too strong for swimming: Playa Manuel Antonio is nicer (Playa Tamarindo, too).

Costa Rica has become a little too commercialized (lots of American stores and restaurants), but it is a beautiful country and the Ticos (the people) are awesome and friendly. Pura vida!

It's a very 'American country'. i saw a Denny's on the way from the airport which was kinda sad.  I really like Monteverde - it's quite beautiful with rain and cloud forests that are just amazing. The wildlife is great.  I found the capital too modern for me but I really liked the country.
