I think it's hard to compare them, their styles are so different. About the only thing they have in common was determined by the years when they became well-known.

It also depends on the existential basis of your question. Do you mean musically or as a person? Billy Joel has had his ups and downs. Stevens denies the Fatwa charge, but seems to have a little identity problem.

Enjoy their pop music immensely. Edge to Stevens there -  IMHO

Cat Stevens, both musically and as a car driver.

If Billy Joel has a rocking edge, then I'm a space shuttle commander. He's made the wimpiest music since Elton John and Barry Manilow, with a weak voice and weak compositional skills.

Fatwa fatwa my ***. Big misquote regarding Stevens, who was ambushed by tabloids. First Swiftboating that I can recall. I'm glad his music is on the air again here in the states. "Peace Train" and its handclaps out rock anything that pudgy Long Island wimp has released.

Billy joel by a long ways.His music is better and he didn't support the fatwa calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie Like Cat Stevens did.
