Considered the Father of American Anthropology, Franz Boas was the man who came up with the concept of cultural relativism and historical particularism.  In a nutshell, he believed that every culture had their own unique history that contributed to who that culture is today and you cannot compare and judge two different cultures since their histories are so different.  He also believed that the only way to ever truly know a culture was to immerse yourself in that culture and learn their ways.  His ideas and methods are what led to American anthropology's multi-disciplinary approach and the heavy field methodology.
