  1. They have a national holiday on 20st of August, in memory of King Stephan, the first Hungarian reign 1000 years ago.

The independence day is celebrated on 23. October, which was the day when Hungary opened the iron curtain in 1989, causing the breakdown of the warshaw pact communist countries.

  2. As others have noted, Hungary has more than one holiday similar to America's "Independence Day".

One is August 20, St. Stephen's day, which is celebrated with fireworks and processions. (A procession is like a parade with religious motivations. <grin>) St. Stephen was Hungary's first king, but this was 1000 years ago, so it's not so much a celebration of independence as of nationhood.

The other two 4th-of-July-like holidays are Oct. 23, which commemorates the beginning of the 1956 revolution, and March 15, which was the start of the 1848 revolution. Neither revolution was successful, so again, the parallel isn't exact, but you've got to celebrate sometime, and the opening of the Iron Curtain in 1989 didn't really have a single day associated with it -- it was more of a process that gained more and more momentum. (There was a public proclamation made on Oct. 23, 1989, declaring a Republican government, so that date has been chosen as _the_ National Holiday, closest to July 4th in motivation/politics.)

  3. Greetings,

The Hungarian legal system states that we Hungarians Have National holidays (Nemzeti ünnep) and state Holidays (állami ünnep).

There are other holidays which are public holidays for example Church holidays (red-letter day  Pirosbetűs ünnep) and there are memorial days which are not public holidays.

    The red-letter days in Hungary:

Újév on the 1. January  New year's eve (Public Holiday)

Az 1848-as forradalom és szabadságharc  ÃƒÂƒÃ‚¼nnepe on the 15. March  1848 war of independence (National holiday)

    Húsvét    Easter (Church holiday)

A munka ünnepe on the 1. May  Labour day (Public Holiday)

    Pünkösd    Whitsunday (Church holiday)

Az új kenyér ünnepe on the 20. August  The new bread's holiday (State Holiday)

Az államalapítás ünnepe on the 20. August  Foundation of the Hungarian Kingdom (State Holiday)

Szent István ünnepe on the 20. August  Saint Stephen's holiday (State Holiday)

Az 1956-os forradalom ünnepe A 3. magyar köztársaság kikiáltásának napja on the 23. October  1956 revolution. , exclamation of the 3rd Hungarian Republic (National Holiday)

Mindenszentek on the 1. November  Hallowmas (Church holiday)

Karácsony on the 25. December, 26. December  Christmas (Church holiday)

Szilveszter on the 31. December  New year's eve (Public Holiday)

I guess the holiday you're looking for is the 1848 war of independence.

    Regards, Zolta

  4. August 20, I will still be here then, married to a Hungarian now for 35 years and my son married a girl from here.

I feel as though I am Hungarian myself now.

It is sort of sad to see the very high inflation here, the prices have gone so high in just the 6 months that we were gone.i really don't know how the average person makes it here.

Gasoline is now $8.oo per gallon here. Food prices are sky high, so many taxes on everything.

The poor Hungarians have always been dumped on, it make me angry that the PM here is such a crook.
