Selective hearing/deafness?

Mine do, they only ever hear what they want, and ignore everything else. What about yours?

  1. I have a husband who suffers terribly from this.

  2. What that's such BS. I'd be spanking the hearing back into those kids. Or give them a taste of their own medicine and selectively hear them when they need something from me.

  3. I AM that child. My parents will tell me things but I'll pretend like I can't hear them or purposely ignore them.

  4. My do I want to kill them sometime

  5. Don't even get me started! lol

My three year old little girl seems to be particularly deaf to the words "no" "don't" and "stay away from"

  6. its just their way of telling u they dont care what u say. dont let that behavior grow like that thats trouble

  7. Yes my son's have this problem.  My six year old son

was so good at this last school year not only at home but even at school with his teachers so much so that I thought he had a real hearing problem so I took him to the ear doctor and was shocked to find out he had perfect hearing.

  8. my son does this... ESPECIALLY when the TV is on. I should get some kind of voice changer and talk like SpongeBob Squarepants to get him to clean his room or quit talking back to Mommy.

  9. I have very selective hearing!

  10. lol part of life, all children are like that some longer then others... Heck most hubby's are too lol

  11. I have twin 7 year old step-daughters and they both suffer from the same problem. The only thing I've tried that works is to make sure they are looking at me when I tell them something. Good luck!

  12. Oh, yes. That's why it's important to make eye contact when you're talking, and make them repeat important things back to you. If you are giving them a new routine or list of jobs to do, make a list and post it so they can learn to manage themselves.

My niece is so bad we have had her hearing checked repeatedly. My nephew was so bad his mom had his checked as well - and they found out he was losing his hearing due to swollen adenoids! He had them removed, his hearing came back and he was able to follow directions so much better.

  13. children are always like that

  14. It's called selective hearing and every child becomes a master at is sooner or later.  Sometimes even husbands do it too.

  15. oh yeah, lol. If there is something I expect they will ignore me on, I will start with something like this:

"Hey guys, who wants fresh cookies". Of course they're all me, me, me. So then I go to "great now that you are paying attn. go clean your room".

  16. Yep and so do some husbands!  It called laziness.

  17. I think every child and many men have this disorder lol.

Don't forget domestic blindness...where they can't see the mess right in front of them

  18. Haha...I think this is more obvious that kids have it, but I think that anyone could have it. I know that i was verbally abused by my stepfather when i was a child and teen, so whenever i hear his voice i automatically ignore him, even when i havent told myself "okay you dont need to hear this, tune him out" i just ignore him at all costs until someone tells me to snap out of it. But i do think that kids seem to have this a bit more, and sometimes my boyfriend if i ask him to do something:) but that is okay:)

  19. yup

  20. Yes, my sons did.  That was until I developed the same problem when they needed my help.. cured them instantly. LOL

  21. LOL.

Yes I do, but I have a bigger problem with my husband's selective hearing!!!

  22. most kids have it, many men never grow out of it.  I learned at a very young age that the newspapers name was dad, b/c apparently my brothers and sisters and I spent years of standing yelling at the paper, "dad", "dad, "dad " and it continued, but we were clearly not talking to my dad.  A few times of yelling dad, and then my dad goes "oh I'm sorry hunny were you talking to me/did you need something", he doesn't do it on purpose, but he can really only focus on reading or listening.  He was a very good father, don't get misled, but he definitely had selective hearing some days, it was not as bad as i explained, but we did have to say dad a few times some days.  He is very interested in news and politics, so it's hard to tare him away from the newspaper or the O'reilly factor.

  23. 4 out of 5 kids have this.

Funnily enough they hear me when I open a candy bar down stairs, but if I tell them that they need to pack up their toys, they don't hear me. Hmmm.

Chill out people. It's a bit of fun. No need to get your knickers in a knot.

  24. They do, but I have to admit to occasionally turning the tables on them :-p

  25. All kids have that at times however boys keep it for life.

  26. Good heavens, yes!!! I have a son who will be 18 in November. I will tell him 20 times to take out the trash but he "won't hear me", but I can go in the next room and close the door and whisper something about fishing and he will ask me what I said when I come out!!
