Question:

Who's the closer relation?

Just wondering - if a person has a great aunt and a great grandmother, who's the closest relation to them out of the two? Is it pretty much the same or is one closer than the other? If anyone knows about this kind of thing, I'd appreciate your help!

Thanks a lot in advance.

  1. I think it has to do with your personal1 relation ship between the family like I'm closer to my aunt than my mom. and my kids call her nana and my mom grandma, but I think everyone is different and its how you was raised

  2. The proper way to determine closeness is to determine what percentage of genes you share.

Your great grandmother is one of eight great grandparents, so you have 12.5% overlap.

Your great aunt shares half the genes of one of your grandparents (25%), which also works out to 12.5%.

  3. genetically, you are closer to your great grandmother, since you are directly in her line of descent.  your great aunt, while being a very close relative, is not your direct progenitor, so she is not quite as close.  but they are very close; pretty much the same.

  4. A great aunt is your granparent's sister. A great grandmother would be their mother.

Closest to you in terms of direct relation would be your great grandmother, because yo are a direct descendent of her, but not of the great aunt. But closest in age would be the great aunt.

  5. they would be equal-  look at it this way--

your brother has a kid- who is closer biologically related to the child- you or your mother?  the answer is you.  your dna is closet to that of your brother and so you would be genteically closer related to a child by being an aunt rather than a grandmother.
