Quick poll. Please type a quick reason as well.

MMA fighters or professional boxers.

e.g. Chuck Liddell or Joe Calzaghe?

For Fittest i am using Aeorbic fitness and gym tests for comparison (chinups, push ups, running, etc)

MMA championships 5X5mins rounds = 30 mins

Boxing 12X3 mins = 36 mins

Much Difference do you think?

Also, using the above examples.....could Liddell cope with Calzaghes punches?

:)

  1. Calzaghe... Offtt yeahhh

  2. in a real fight in the corner of the road lidell would win no problem  okay and an mma fighter typicaly cause they fit in manty different ways cause they use same mucles differently but ifd depends on the artist

  3. Boxers would be fitter for boxing the others for their style of fighting. The training is based according to the sport.Just as pointless a comparison as triathletes and rugby players for example, neither could do the others sport.

  4. Professional boxers I'd say are the fittest.

Many boxers train to go longer than 12 rounds. They don't focus on putting on mass in weight training, they train for strength, endurance and power.

Alot of MMA fighters have bulky muscle which can often be a waste as the extra weight causes you to tire quicker.

Also having big muscles doesn't necessarily make you stronger so you'd assume MMA fighters are stronger because they tend to have bigger muscles. But a lot of that muscle growth doesn't contribute to their fighting capabilities.

Calzaghe's not known for his powerful shots (due to fragile hands) but he's fast and delivers flurries of shots which smothers his opponents.

Hatton however is a hard hitter and I doubt Liddell could cope with the punches Hatton delivers.

  5. MMA has longer rounds, with less rest, and more activity.

Though MMA is a bit more anaerobic than boxing.

So while I think some boxers might be able to run further than a MMA fighter, I think many MMA fighters could sprint further and more often.

What you have to count in your math there is that over 12 rounds you get 11 minutes of rest.

In MMA (in a championship fight) you get 4.

Also being that there are less rounds in a MMA fight you can't afford to take rounds off like you do in boxing.

Since most MMA fights are 3 rounds, it means you gotta win two of those, and still put up a good showing in a third one or you could lose.

In boxing you can 4 or 5 rounds off, and still be in a good position to win.

Again MMA fighters have to sprawl, wrestle, move around more as kicks are involved, and have to use more large muscles wrestling with body strength.

Personally Chuck Liddell isn't someone I would consider in the top 20 of well conditioned MMA figthers, whereas Joe Calzaghe is.

Now if you compared Joe to a Diego Sanchez, or a GSP, or even Tito Ortiz, people who are well known for conditioning then that is a pretty even match up, and I would say fitness wise the MMA fighter would probably win.

Edit: Hammy are you serious? Fighting on the ground Takes MORE STAMINA then fighting on the feet. You are using more muscle groups, plus you have the weight of another person on top you of you to contend with. I promise you will get 10X more gassed scrambling and doing matwork, then striking. Not to mention getting up from the ground and getting taken back down... seriously, you must have never grappled to thing that standing up takes more cardio than matwork. (I'm not talking about laying there, though with someone on top of you it is pretty d**n exhausting.

  6. Boxers are probably in better shape. During an mma fight, the guys normally tie eachother up, and go to the ground, thus giving whoever in on top, a brief time to rest, whereas in boxing, you can tie eachother up, but the ref breaks it up immediately (or is supposed to).

Another reason why a boxer is in better shape is the way they train. Part of a boxers training regiment is running, alot of running. This is just one example, but typically, a boxer will do more cardio training than an mma fighter because they have to move around the ring more so that they dont get trapped in a corner.

Here is the main reason why a boxer is normally in better shape.

Most serious boxers will train for endurance. They want to be able to go the distance with there opponent.

Most serious mma fighters will spend more time on the mat working on their technique so that they can beat the c**p out of their opponent, and so that the fight wont last the full five rounds.

  7. Benicio del toro is so fit. He's hot.

  8. Definately Boxers.

Often MMA fighters go to the ground. You don't need as much stamina to fight on the ground in an MMA fight than you would in a Boxing ring.

  9. Well, I think boxers are fitter because in mma you can win by submission which generally requires more technique than strength compared to knocking out someone like in boxing.

But I'm not saying MMA fighters aren't fit...they're very fit...MMA fighters need to have good cardio...

  10. Mixed martial arts encompasses many styles of fighting including boxing.  One of the main reasons why MMA has less but longer is it taxes every part of the body.  Here's an example set a clock for three minutes and hit a heavy bag with hand strikes only use any combos you like: jabs, cross, hooks, upper cuts etc.  Hit it as hard as you can as often as you can keeping good focus on your form.  Then try punching, elbowing, clinching and kicking a bag for either three minutes or better yet five minutes.  This is an over simplification of MMA vs. Boxing but you will instantly realize moving large muscles like your legs along with punching, grappling, takedowns etc...  Is far more demanding overall.

Boxers are in fantastic shape and they work out their entire body to get ready for a fight.  MMA fighters must prepare every part of their body to fight and they must focus on multiple disciplines not simply one school of training.  Much much more demanding in my mind.

My money will always be on a world champion MMA guy when compared to even the most talented striker in the world.    One set of tools can only fix so many problems but many sets of tools can fix just about everything.

    Just my humble opinion.

  11. I'm going to make this one really easy for you... go find a partner and roll around for 15 mins and see if you don't gas out... MMA requires so much more activity then boxing. Your whole body is worked in ways you didn't know it could be!

  12. I would say MMA because they have to do much more than just box.  They have to be able to use their strength to get out of pinned positions.  They use their knees and elbows and have very little padding on their hands.  I think I have seen more blood on an MMA mat than on a boxing ring.  Don't get me wrong boxers stillahve to have strength and endurance too.  They both have to be at the top of their games to compete.

  13. I think they work equally as hard on conditioning. They use almost identical excercises nowadays. But I think that a boxer would gas quicker in an MMA bout than an MMA fighter would in a boxing match, due to the fact that MMA takes place standing, clinching, rolling, etc, and that takes more energy out of you than standing, throwing punches, clinching for a few seconds and being broken apart  by the ref.

As far as Calzaghe/Liddell, Calzaghe throws punches for volume in order to outwork and outpoint his opponents. Im not saying that he cant hit hard when he wants too, but I don't think he can match Chuck's KO power.

  14. Look at Forrest Griffin and Sean Sherk

    MMA fittest!

  15. chantell = wrong

    judomofo = correct

  16. I'm the fittest.
