Who's with Richard Simmons? Let's keep Phys Ed in Public Schools!?

If you oppose Phys Ed in public schools, why? I can't comprehend how anyone would want to eliminate this from school when half the parents of America don't care what junk they throw in their kids mouth. We need to give each child a fighting chance against the failures of their parents.

  1. i think it should be an elective and not force it. Some people dont want to exercise and most of the time we waste our time in P.E. the coaches just sit on their asses al period and dont even let us go to other classes in which we need to take finals! and when they do make us exercise they exagerate, they makes us do 75 pushups (i can do it others cant) and make us do suicides throughout the rest of the period.

  2. I think p.e. is really important. I actually enjoy it, and it's refreshing after sitting in class for so long. Also, most kids don't get much exercise outside of that class so it just seems reasonable to keep it.

  3. I agree with you (and Richard).

Lack of physical activity doesn't just hurt kids'  bodies ... it hurts their academic performance, as well.

Kids NEED to get up and move around ... "blow off steam" ... ideally, several times a day.  When they don't get a chance to do so, their minds wander and they lose focus.  This is especially true for kids who have attentional disorders (ADHD, for example).  For those kids, Phys. Ed. is a godsend.

And sure, from a health standpoint, schools should be encouraging, not discouraging, kids to be active.  So many schools have even cut back or eliminated recess.  RECESS.  Kids can't even get outside to run around and be kids anymore!  Ridiculous.

Schools are cutting out many programs (arts, music, etc.) because of budget constraints, but it costs little to nothing to have a game of dodgeball or play tag, even if a school cannot afford fancy gym equipment.

  4. PE, needs to stay in schools. not because of health, but for people who enjoy athletics.

I don't think you it should be forced to graduate, but i think they need to leave for those who want it. i personally enjoy PE it is fun just to take a break each day for math and hard class. Sports are my thing, they make the year go by faster, and with out it, i don't know what i would do.

so leave it in for those who want it, and don't force people to take it. it should be a choice.

  5. as a math teacher and parent

i say i will never pull a kid out of p.e just for a math test.

kids esp the yanks need to exercise

its not like it was when iwas in brtain and had to take 3 busses to get to school and lug shopping backwards and forwards form the shops over bridges!!!

coming to america -- i myself have become obese- the car driving everywhere doesn't help-

they hypercondriac parents not letting their kids go to the park- with their supervision doesnt help- they wont go with them- they would rather sit on their couches and watch tv.

when i teach my middle school kids - i'm fitter than them- i dotn want the falling asleep in my lessons , cos theyve been playing games all night, or unable to tie their own shoes.
