  1. The name of the architect, if any, is unknown. Many of the great gothic churchs were built on the basis of very general sketches that were transformed into viable buildings by the masons who built them. The science of architecture was still being developed and what was possible was not fully understood. Thus building went on based on past experience and was adjusted as deficiencies became apparent. On several occassions during this period, there were spectaclular collapses as builders exceeded the bounds of the possible.
