Question:

Who Do You Tip?

Who Exactly Should We Tip And What Should We Base It On?

Do you tip a limo or cab driver? What about a bus or L-train driver.

Do you tip your barber for cutting your hair, but not your tailor for altering your suit?

Do you tip the plumber, locksmith, carpenter, or house painter for their services?

It is NOT based on the low salary of service workers, because I know you don’t tip the kid at McDonalds, the clerk at Wal*Mart, the cashier or bag boy at the Grocery, or Home Depot guy who mixes your paint.

It is NOT based on the level and quality of service received, because I know you never tip your pharmacist for filling your prescription, or the doctor who “serviced” your body, or your nurse in the hospital. Not to mention, your dentist, lawyer or vet.

It is NOT based on everyday dealings with people, because I know you never tipped your office mail room people, or your children’s teachers, the school bus driver, the guy at the toll booth, or the guy you buy a paper from.

  1. According to the Big Book of Etiquette it should go like so

A limo or cab driver ~ 15% of your total fare, if they load or unload your bags or help you quite a bit it is 20%.  City bus & L-Train Drivers a no-no unless you take them everyday and then you can tip them on Christmas

    The Barber ~ 10%

Your Tailor ~ 10% for misc (hem etc) 15% to 20% big alterations

Plumber, Locksmith, Tow Truck Driver, Furniture Delivery Person, Tire Changer ~ $5

Carpenters & House Painters are contracted and usually you tip according the contract amount ~ 15%

The Grocery Boy who carriers your bags out, Restroom Attendants, Coat Check Attendants, Starbucks Tip Cup, Barista ~ $1

DO NOT TIP YOUR DR. YOUR DENTIST OR YOUR VET OR YOUR PHARMACIST

    Car Detailer ~ 15%

    Massage Therapist ~ 20%

Tattoo or piercing artist ~ 10% to 20%

Manicurist, facialist or aestheitician ~ 15%

Hair Stylist, or color specialist ~ 10% to 20%

Shampoo or other styling assistant ~ $2 to $5

    Pet Groomer ~ 15%

    Pet Sitter ~ 15%

Car Washer ~ $2 to $3 for a car and $2 to $5 for an SUV or Truck

There is plenty more to cover.....this is just starters....

    Peace & Love :)

  2. I might be inpolite, but I tip only at the restaurant. And only if the waiter was nice to me. Why sould I tip him for doing his job he already receives a salary for? Prices in my country are too high anyway.

Tipping should be based on the real service- nice and clean job, good tip. But don 't expect me to tip after waiting a short eternity at my table and struggling to catch your attention and place my order.

  3. Man! I am so glad that I live in a tipless culture... The answer to all of those here is No one gets tipped.

They get paid for their service in their fees.

    Edit::

<LOL> I made a typo before... "topless culture"... Another topic for another day..

  4. Tipping vs. not tipping is really only based on tradition.  Traditionally we tipped cab drivers, barbers, etc.  In fact, many years ago people DID also tip tailors, plumbers, etc.  That probably ended when corporations came in.  That's why you don't tip at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc.--because the owners don't allow it.  I worked at Shopko, Target and Old Navy and wasn't allowed to accept tips, but I was allowed to accept them at the pet store I worked at.  And it's not because they have a low salary, the only reason people have low salaries is BECAUSE that owner/boss allows tips.  It's totally unfair, but you don't tip because of that, you tip as a means of motivating them to do a good job.  I have a dare for you--go to a restaurant, eat your meal, don't tip the waiter.  Go back a week later, request that same waiter and see what the service is like.  THAT'S why you tip.

  5. To me tipping is an out-of-date, archaic, unfair, unjustified shake down of the American consumer.  Pay me an extra 15-20% and I will do my job!  Sounds like pure extortion.

Pay all employees a fair or agreeable wage for their work, and then charge me a fair price for your product or service.

    No tipping. Period.

  6. I hate te whole tipping thing and people trying to tell you to tip everyone like its polite! I only tip if they deserve one i.e if they were quick, nice or did a good job.

I hate people who expect a tip like the delivery driver of the food you ordered and how he stands there pathetically waiting for a tip when he took 50 minutes to get here and my d**n food is ice cold now!

I tip if they deserve it, if they don't they can F**K off!

  7. I tip my hairdresser, manicurist, waiters, taxi and limo' drivers, pizza delivery, moving company people.  Other regulars, I buy a small gift at Christmas and for my mailman, a larger gift.  When I lived in an apartment, doorman received much money for Christmas but he did many favours for the owners and was a dear!

During WWII, many people began tipping the butcher, Mr. White, he gave my mother and our neighbor Kay, the best cuts from his personal allocation and then, one week, both women found a pair of nylons in with their meat order!  After my dad and Kay's husband had a "meeting" about this, my father suggested inviting Mr. White, his wife and children to Sunday lunch.  Turned out Mrs. White worked in the shop and chose my mom and Kay as recipients because they were fun and pretty and had super legs!  Hairdressers, also, were tipped along with milk and bakery delivery men, waiters, taxi drivers.

Read the reply quoting Big Book of Etiquette and wonder how many professions paid to have their group included?   I should, perhaps, receive a tip from each person I smile at during the day?

  8. I've tipped people before. (yes, it's a pretty general statement.) I know you tip your waiter/waitress or host/hostess at restaurants. I know if you tip your captain on your dive boat, they can take you out of the way to places that they do not normally go for the regular tourist. I even tip my hairstylist.
