Who runs cross country (XC)?  According the USATF website: USATF's largest youth program is the Junior Olympics, where nearly 70,000 youth athletes compete each year in the Track & Field and Cross Country championships. Many of America's Olympians began as youth athletes, including stars such as Jeremy Wariner, Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards, Bryan Clay, Lauryn Williams, Adam Nelson, Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi.

    Kids who run XC on the club start at the3k or 3,000 meter (1.9 miles) distance start at age 9.Thereafter, the distance increments by 1,000-meter increments up to 5,000 meter (3.1 miles) usually at 18 years of age. Some middle schools in the USA do the one mile distance for their athletes. At the high school, the race distance range from 1.9 miles to 3.0 miles or 5,000 meter (3.1miles).  At the college level the men run the 4 mile or 8k (4.8 miles) distance. University and national level xc runners cover any distance from the 5k to 8k for the women and 8k to 10k (6.2 miles) for the men. At the International level there are two type of courses Long and Short. For the women the short course is 4k and the long course is 6k. The men the run the 6k for the short and the long course is 12k (7.49 miles). The 12k distance is sometimes run at the national XC championships every February by USATF.
