Archaeologists have found human remains around 600,000 years old around Sendai, there is also evidence that the original people of Japan first began living around the Kyushu area. It is possible that they first traveled here from the mainland when Asia was one super continent. As for western influence and occupation of the area, Dutch ships traded with Japan via the Nagasaki area from 1797 to 1809. After this, Matthew Perry came by ship and demanded all of Japan open itself up to the outside world in the 1850's. That was the end of their long standing isolation.

If you mean, who were the first Europeans to set foot on Japanese soil, I believe it was a group of Jesuit missionaries from Portugal in the 1500's. Not sure on the names there. But Japan as a country was well known to its neighbors, such as China, long before the first European visit, and since Europe had been trading with China for a long time prior (think Marco Polo), it is likely that Europe had at least heard of Japan before actually "finding" it.

lol the nation of japan is a little isolated throughout history.the first people that live their well its a long story.originally the dutch saw and visited japan not the portugese.
