  1. It was assigned to him by the Dodger clubhouse staff, because it was next on a list of requests he had submitted.

Obviously, he woud have liked #24, but that one's been retired (Walter Alston), #34 was second on the list, but that belonged to Fernando Valuenzuela.  Though it hasn't been officially retired yet, the Dodgers traditionally won't re-assign a "famous" number as long as that player is still with the team in an active role (Fernando is a team broadcaster).

#14 and #44 are currently held by Pablo Ozuna (who, I think, is an old friend of his) and Takashi Saito.

#99 was next on the list but apparently it was chosen by Manny's agent Scott Boras and not Manny himself.

Boras is a pioneer for selling players based on their celebrity as well as their talents.  Knowing that the Dodgers were going to ask Manny to cut his trademark dreds and wear a uniform that actually fits, Boras figured that the distinctive 99 fit into Manny's "wacky"image...and could become his new "thing."

When Manny got to LA on Friday, he apparently said he'd take 28.  By that time, however, the Dodgers had already printed thousands of "Manny 99" jerseys and other stuff, so he decided to just go with it.

  2. well 24 was retired, and dodgers proposed 28, but manny said no i want 34..but that was fernando valuenzalas and Unofficially retired, so suddenly he chose 99..

well good luck LA. I hope dodgers do good, but manny does bad just to make him miss boston. But manny doesnt do bad (offensively)

  3. His agent, Scott Boras, chose it because as the others said, 24 is retired, and 34 is "sentimentally retired.

It is in today's LA TIMES, that the equipment manager of the Dodgers dealt with  Scott Boras will Manny was flying to LA.

    Good question, btw.

  4. manny picked it.

  5. idk???

  6. i guess he picked it.

  7. Manny wanted 34 but the number was taken and 28 was retired. The owner of the Dodgers gave him the number probably.
