For me only two athletes can be considered and they are Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps.

For me Usain Bolt has to win it for me because when you think of the olympics you think of the track and field event not swimming .And In swimming there are so many events to win gold in .In mean you have 200m freestyle 200m medley etc.

And lastly it is the way he did it.Just look at the margin of victory when he wins and he has a charismatic cheeky personality that Phelps doesnt have which is exactly what the game needed

  1. I reckon its Chris Hoy, but then I am Scottish so Its probably a biased choice!

  2. Without doubt, Michael Phelps.

He's decorated in gold and records.

  3. Usain Bolt

  4. not really

when u think of olympics u think the best of the best coming to compete in different sports

but ya i totaly agree with u when u said tht its between usain bolt and Micheal Phelps

i think they are both the stars but i think micheal is the bigger one

i mean usain isnt finished all of his events is he??

  5. Phelps- He competed in 8 events and won them all.  Usain Bolt was very impressive, but I would like to see him do the 400m also.  An extra event or two would be draining on the body.  I think someone winning all three of those sprints is the man.

  6. You call Usain charismatic! He is an arrogant, pompous fool! He looks like an idiot when he wins - running around, making gestures and his daggone mom was literally PUSHING people to get over to him. They need to get some class!

    Phelps ALL THE WAY!

  7. Phelps, Bolts and the Dream Team IV form Nigeria

  8. in my opinion-

    usain bolt

    shawn johnson

    michael phelps

    nastia liukin

one of those 4-they're the ones we've heard about the most...

  9. GB!

  10. i agree with the poster although i think a lot of black people will say the same whilst a lot of white people will go for phelps. i, being a unbiased asian, would also go for bolt however. he has a magnetic personality, abit of a show-off perhaps, but the man's a double olympic record breaking gold medalist!

  11. Phelps is the star. He had the support of the basketball team and there were so many stories just about him. He also was pretty incredible winning 8 gold medals. That's like 1/3 of all our golds

  12. Phelps.

When Bolt get his 8th gold medal I will call him a star.

I think of swimming when I think of the Olympics, not running.

When runners start running backwards, sideways etc, then I will watch it more. Swimming has backstroke, freestyle, butterfly etc.

  13. Lightning Bolt

  14. Phelps

    Bolt

    Adlington

  15. Vibrant,

There's no question Michael Phelps was the star of the Olympics. His 17 swims, 7 World Records, 8 Gold Medals, the drama of coming from behind in the 100 Butterfly to win by .01 seconds, as well as Jason Lezak's come from behind in the 4 x 100 free relay which he was a part of.

To the true sports enthusiast that understands his dominance there is no question. What Michael Phelps accomplished will most likely never be repeated. He won freestyle races, butterfly races, individual medley races, sprint races, middle distance races, distance races, relay races, come from behind races, winning by comfortable margin races, and he could have won 4 other races (100 free, 400 free, 100 back, and 200 back) had the Olympic swimming venue been spread out over 2 weeks instead of 1. He is the most dominant athlete for a single sport that's ever been. We will not see an athlete like him in our lifetime. Mark Spitz was spectacular but Michael Phelps is in a different league well above that.

Usain Bolt was spectacular too but he is so one dimensional compared to Phelps there's no comparison. Track and Field has 26 different events for the athletes to select from whereas Swimming has 16, so the argument that it's easier to win more medals in the sport of swimming is simply false.

If you asked for two stars then I agree with your assessment. But Phelps shined like the sun whereas Usain shined like the moon.

Great question. It'll stir up a great deal of conversation.

    Enjoy!

  16. Bolt as he has only been doing it for 4 months but also phelps as that was an amazing achievement. Oh and dont forget chris Hoy

  17. when you think of the olympics you think of the track and field event not swimming

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard on here, what, are you 8 years old, you obviously don't know a darn thing about the Olympics.

Phelps all the way and most of the world would agree.  He mad history.

  18. shawn johnson

    nastia liuken

    misty may

    kerri walsh

    usain bolt

    yang wei

    fei cheng

    walter dix

    michael phelps

    sanya richards

    shawn crawford

  19. Phelps is a superstar

bolt doesn't' have near the accomplishments Phelps does and hasn't' made history yet.

but who cares if you like that arrogant cocky bolt, to each his own.

Bolt doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Phelps.

  20. Has to be the Jamaican team!!  They have dominated the sprints - taken the crown away from America .  All of these young talented unknowns beating the veterans in the game is amazing, and smashing WR and OR.

I do think Phelps has been a star in his own right!! Must give credit to him for his achievements.

  21. phelps

  22. Usain Bolt !

  23. The Gymnastic judges

look around, everyone is talking about them!

  24. Where the heck have you been.

It's Phelps by a long shot, Bolt hasn't earned anything compared to Phelps, that's not superstar materiel right there.

You foreigners only look at gold, Phelps has more gold, proof is in the pudding.

  25. I would have to put Phelps first and Bolt second because Phelps has done something unbelieveable. Something unprecendented.

And Bolt did the same thing two. A gold in the 100 and 200, and world records in both. But Phelps did the same thing 7 times. (7 WR, 8 Gold)

  26. No one. Every athlete has tried their best in these olympics.

  27. I think Phelps and Bolt has been equally impressive.

  28. Definitely Bolt ... props to Phelps for an amazing accomplishment, but Bolt definitely is the star of the games given the nature of the events.

Remember, Phelps has the advantage that swimmers "typically" come from first world countries (typically excludes most third world countries) whereas track and field involves more countries around the world.  Most third world countries don't even have swimming pools to swim in, let alone facilities to train and compete in.  Track is available to everyone, therefore, a more competitive field as compared to swimming.

Throw in the $700 Speedo swimsuits required just to be on par with the richer swimmers and you leave out even more swimmers ...  Like soccer, track is more competitive, and the 100 metre dash is considered the premiere event of the Olympics, therefore, Bolt has been the star ...

  29. me!!!! Did you see me go!!! Wow!!! hu? HU?

  30. Usain Bolt. Broke 2 world records and the 100m sprint is the main event in the Olympics.

    All this with style.

edit, for you misguided people, 100m sprint is considered the MAIN event, not anything in swimming.

The world's fastest man sounds better than fastest butterfly swimmer.
