  1. Yea the movies were based on Chuck Wepner

Though If in real life chuck took the same beatings as portrayed in rocky...the man must really be made of sheet metal! =]

  2. Supposedly inspired after Sylvester Stallone saw Chuck Wepner go 15 rounds (last round TKO) with Ali in a fight for the heavyweight title, when Wepner really had no business being in the same ring.

But in my opinion the fighting style of the fictional Rocky has more in common with Rocky Marciano or Jake LaMotta than Wepner, and the choice of name - Rocky Balboa (like Rocky Marciano and Rocky Graziano) "the Italian Stallion" (I won't mention where that came from!!) - is pure Italian American.

  3. yep! chuck wepner is the influence behind rocky balboa.

  4. Chuck Wepner

  5. The influence for the original "Rocky" was the fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner.  Ali was the defending champ while Wepner was a jouneyman heavyweight contender who most thought would not be able to go the distance (full 15 rounds) with Ali.  Wepner did better than everybody thought he would and even managed to drop Ali (although it may have been more of a trip).  Wepner made it to the 15th round but was stopped in the final 20 seconds.  Apollo Creed in many ways represents Muhammad Ali- the way they fight, their personas, etc.  Rocky Balboa represents a working class hero who got a shot at the title and made the most of it- even though he didn't win (in the original), nobody called him a loser similarly to Chuck Wepner.
