Who Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish should target in January

The January transfer window is days away from opening and Liverpool are in need of a few players, but who should King Kenny be looking to bring in for the Reds?
The Barclays Premier League is nearly halfway done and Liverpool are in and around the area they would expect to be, in order to push on for that highly competitive top four finish and that illusive spot in the UEFA Champions League.
What happens between now and the end of the season in May, will determine whether or not King Kenny’s first full season with the club, where he is a living legend, will be a success or not.
The performances have been solid, yet consistency is the name of the game and Liverpool have not been consistent enough, mostly because a majority of the new signings have not lived up to their full potential.
Charlie Adam, Jose Enrique and Luis Suarez have been impressive, yet the likes of Sebastian Coates, Stuart Downing, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102 and Andy Carroll have disappointed.
With midfielder Lucas out for the rest of the season, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 just returning from a lengthy absence due to injury and Luis Suarez on the verge of receiving a lengthy ban, reinforcements will be the need of the hour for Dalglish and for Liverpool.
First things first, Liverpool need to find another quality striker, one who can put chances away and spend more time with his hands in the air celebrating than on the floor rueing a missed chance.
That may be a harsh statement yet Liverpool have hit the goalposts an astonishing 16 times this season. If even half of them had ended up in the back of the net, the Reds would have been in a much more comfortable situation.
This conveniently brings us to a certain 26-year old German international by the name of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lukas-Podolski-c22896. Currently on the payroll of FC Koln, the talented forward can take some of the burden off Luis Suarez and will be a near perfect partner for the Uruguayan international.
Podolski can also play on the wing, which is an added bonus and will give a number of players in the side a run for their money. The striker has been at his current club since 2009 and his goals per game ratio since then is just under one goal every two games, which is impressive.
He is currently in a rich vein of form as his return of 14 goals in 16 appearances suggests and the former Bayern Munich man is around the age when he will be in the prime of his career and moving to a club like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 will not do him any harm.
The only question though is whether or not Fenway Sports Group and Damien Comolli will pursue the striker come the January transfer window.
With the striker department taken care of, another gaping hole in the Liverpool side is central midfield. With Lucas out for the season and Gerrard needing time, Charlie Adam is not the type of player who can control games. Henderson and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonjo-Shelvey-c19081 are far from finished products meaning that for the time being, the Reds do not have a destroyer in the middle of the park.
A number of players could be brought in, each with their respective set of strengths and weakness, but Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra is ripe for the plucking.
The holding midfielder has been surplus to requirements over the past few seasons, rarely getting an extended run in the playing eleven. The 26-year old French international also has experience playing in the Barclays Premier League having spent stints with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 and Portsmouth before his high profile move to Madrid.
While the transfer looks unlikely, Lass would be the perfect replacement for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lucas-c22528 in the short term and would fit in with Fenway Sports Group’s transfer policy of buying players who are not over a certain age.
