Who Out There Keeps Kosher To Some Degree?

And what to degree do you keep it? I live in Israel now so I keep strictly, 100% kosher. But when I'm in the US (I'm from Alabama, not much kosher meat there) I keep what I call "Biblically kosher". I do the same thing as normal, just with regular meat. I also make sure that all the other products in my house are Circle U or K. I'll also eat out at restaraunts even though I know they cook pork and mix meat and dairy there. I just make sure that I make it 150% clear to the waiter that there better not be 1 speck of dairy on my plate with meat.

  1. I don't keep kosher, but there are kosher foods, such as hot dogs, that I'll only buy if they're kosher for quality reasons.  Also, a lot kosher foods just taste better to me since that's what Grandma served. However, I do mix meat and dairy, I don't have separate dishes, and I love my shellfish.  If I were in Israel , I'd probably do what everyone else was doing to not offend anyone, but here I do what I enjoy.

  2. Strictly speaking, when you're in the US you're not keeping kosher at all, at least not according to the rabbis (but you did say 'biblically kosher') unless your kitchen is kosher, etc. etc. (see my recent answer about kosher meat), and certainly if you eat in non-kosher restaurants.  I guess when you're in the States you keep what might be called "kosher-style".  I mean, you either keep kosher or you don't, according to the accepted laws of kashrut.

I always thought it was funny, all those marvellous Jewish delis where I grew up in L.A. serving Reuben sandwhiches lol!

I used to keep kosher but don't any more at all (long story), and also when I lived in Israel many years ago (I live in the UK now).  And I also kept 'biblically kosher', like you, for a long time when I lived in the States.

NOTE:  Ralph, what I meant was by saying you're not keeping kosher when you're in the US is because you said you ate at non-kosher restaurants, which no Chasid would do.  You also said you did "...*regular* meat", so I took that to mean non-kosher meat.  And I also meant that even if everything in your house is OU or K, if you don't use separate pots and pans and plates, etc., that would make the food non-kosher, according to strict kashrut.  I was certainly not making a value judgment.  Sorry if it appeared that way.

  3. I am so bad.My husband has totally corrupted me!.I was raised jewish, but as soon as I got out of my parents site I went nuts for yummy things like real pepperoni on my pizza. I never did do the milk and meat thing...we were not that orthodox.

I must say that some kosher food is awesome...a good matzo ball is to die for!

  4. im only kosher when it comes to hot dogs! they r the best!

  5. "I'm from Alabama, not much kosher meat there"

I hope you realize that there is a wonderful tool called the "Internet" in which you can use to order kosher meat and have it shipped to you via FedEx anywhere in the USA.

I know of this now defunct butcher shop in Scranton, PA who did some business that way. The owner mentioned he shipped some kosher meat out to Wyoming.

For the record, I'm Orthodox so I keep kosher completely.

  6. I'm jewish, I eat pork and shellfish and pizza with pepperoni and cheeseburgers. And basicaly whatever the h**l I want.

    Why? Cuz I just dont give a c**p.   :D

  7. I do to some degree - I eat only Kosher meats and foods prepared Kosher but I do not keep meat and dairy separate, etc. even though I was not raised Kosher.  My grandfather was Jewish and my grandmother was Episcopalian and I have many Jewish relatives throughout the Eastern US though who do keep strictly Kosher so I know that it is possible - I love going to their houses to eat as they make some of the best food that I have ever tasted.
