  1. gotwheels really has it backwards.  Today, the top half of wage earners pay over 95% of the taxes, the bottom half pay under 5%.  That would shift dramatically under either plan - with the flat tax the working poor would get hosed even worse that under the "fair tax" plan.

    People favor it because they don't understand it, and think like gotwheels.   After all, who could be against "fair"  ;<}

    Many people buy into the idea that the "rich" pay little or no taxes, that they avoid it through loopholes.  While a small number do manage to avoid paying high taxes, most pay a lot.

  2. The only people for the most part that aren't in favor of a flat tax are the rich that don't pay their fair share because of write offs and shelters that the average person isn't in the position to use. If there was a flat tax of let's say 20% of your income and the deductions that the rich use was eliminated then, someone who earns 20,000,000 would pay a lot more than what they do now. When the rich because of shelters and deductions pay less than the average worker, something is wrong. before retiring from the corporate world I paid more tax on my income than the chairman of the board, and I earned a h**l of a lot less than he did. We are led to beleive that the average person would pay more and doesn't want that, but  the part they leave out is the rich would be paying more taxes and should be paying more. They want us to think that's it's unfair to make the rich pay their fair share and for the most part we beleive that.

  3. The wealthy would love it.

    The poor and middle class.....not so much.
