I think Sampras was truly the better grasscourt player. Even if Federer eventually surpasses Sampras's record 7 Wimbledon titles, Federer's style is still not what Wimbledon is all about. He may approach the net more compared to everyone else in his generation, but no one will ever be able to match Sampras's consistency, precision, and art in serve and volleying (ie even though the tournament isn't Wimbledon, watch this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=esbvf2RJXDQ). Federer's game is probably more suited to the US Open where his speed and accuracy from the baseline is augmented by the fast speed of the surface (the grass at Wimbledon is apparently slower than it used to be).

I say Sampras because of his serve and volley game. It's more effective on real grass (as opposed to this green clay that Wimbledon presently has).

Yes Federer beat Sampras on grass, but that was one match which ended 7-5 in the 5th. I believe over 10 matches on grass, Sampras would have won 6 or 7.

I'm a total Federer fan and i say he is the best on grass.Of course,Rafa is better on clay.But considering the time for which he has held his no.1 rank n 12 grand slams i say he is the best.May be he hasn't got the most number of grand slams,but he is only still 21-22yrs.So he can v.well play 4 another 5 yrs.And i'm sure he will prove 2 b a better player.

That is a super difficult one. If I'm not mistaken, Sampras won 7 Wimbledon. Federer only has 5. If Federer wins this Wimbledon, it could change my answer. But now, I'd say Sampras. He had the ideal grass serve and always attacked net, which was the traditional way of playing grass. I'd have to say Pete Sampras overall.
