  1. Soviet is a word in the Russian language, literally it can be translated as symphony(not in the music sense). Its means to offer advice and council.

Now it refers to anything or anybody  to do with Russia (the Soviet  Union).

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, or the СССР), was also called the Soviet Union, and was a constitutionally socialist state that existed in Eastern Europe or Eurasia  from 1922 to 1991.

Emerging from the Russian Empire following the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War of 1918–1921, the USSR was a union of several Soviet republics.

Initially established as a union of just four Soviet Socialist Republics, the USSR grew to contain 15 constituent  republics by 1956: Armenian , Azerbaijan , Belorussian , Estonian , Georgian, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Moldavian, Russian, Tajik, Turkmen, Ukrainian, and Uzbek S.

With the break up of the USSR many of these states claimed independence.

I hope this is of some help to you.

  3. Soviet is the Russian word for "committee."  "Soviets" as a concept of a governmentalunit first arose in the 1905  Revolution, when a committee of workers in St. Petersberg became the primary mouthpiece for resistance to csarist actions in the capitol.

When revolution again broke out in the spring of 1917,committees (soviets) of workers and soldiers/sailors sprang up as an alternative to the power network which surrounded the government bureaucracy supporting the Duma.

Much of the difficulty which faced the post-Csarist period from the spring of 1917 until November revolved around how much power would actually be exercised by the centralized (and largely conservative) goverment and the various soviet organizations. The position articulated by Lenin was one of "all power to the soviets" even though, when that position was first articulated, the Bolshevik party was a minority party within the structure of the largest (Petrograd & Moscow) soviets.

After the November revolution, and even more after the assassination attempt on Lenin by a member of the erstwhile politically allied "Left SR" party, the "soviet" structure remained (indeed, the principal legislative group in the Soviet Union was the "Soviet of Soviets" until the 1990's), but real power moved from the various "committees" to the "cpommunist party" leadership.

  7. A Soviet was either a governing official or person living in the Soviet Union, the socialist state that emerged from the Russian Empire.  Those Soviets supporting the USSR (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)  were influenced by Vladimir Lenin, who sparked revolutions in attempt to put Marxist ideas about a workers' state into practice.  These supporters, the Bolsheviks, gained power after the Russian Civil War (1917-1922).  The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 due to decline in economic and political structures.
