Question:

Who agrees that a moped restricted to 30 is more dangerous than an unrestricted one?

A restricted moped is more dangerous than having a derestricted one. I ride a restricted moped, I have no choice being 16. I get dangerously over taken beeped at sworn at and in some cases nearly run off the road. If a moped is restricted to a more reasonable speed, 50 would be ideal, it could keep up with the flow of traffic therefore making it safer. Other drivers wouldn't get wound up, angry, frustrated and ultimately more dangerous. Looking at the implications if this law was changed, a more stringent CBT would have to be made. This could make 16 year olds better drivers. Overall, the roads become safer, the drivers become better and everyone benefits. I propose mopeds should be restricted to 50mph, currently, they are allowed on roads with a 50 mph speed limit so it makes perfect sense to enable them to stick to the speed limits. If you were a police officer, would you stop someone doing 20mph under the speed limit? Of course you would. This is what happens due to the 30mph restrictions but the permission to use 50mph roads. This law is a contradiction to another law, something has to be done. If you agree, please visit this link and sign the petition. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/mopedslimit/

  1. I agree that a 30mph moped on a 50mph road is not a good idea. My solution is to ban mopeds from anything above a 40mph limit. They're not really suitable for anything other than town driving.

  2. yes they are

  3. I agree that mopeds should be banned, and only bikes capable of 50 mph upwards allowed on the road. When i was 16 i had a 50cc bike and it's not nice being overtaken by an artic doing 56mph when your only doing 30ish, the amount of times i nearly got sucked under the wheels is unbelievable.

But i also think that either the age to ride bikes be upped to 18 or have more stringent tests for 16 year olds, and not like the C.B.T is, because it's a joke that someone who has never ridden a bike before can go and do a 1 day C.B.T course and then be able to go out onto the open roads and ride a bike upto a 125cc which could be capable of 100m.p.h.

    Doesn't make sense to me

  4. My tractor is not allowed to do more than 20mph on the road. It is capable of more but regulations say 20mph. Motorists just need to calm down on the roads. Mopeds should still be restricted to 30mph. The bigger the machine the faster you go. But it also makes you learn quicker the basic road safety.

Cars should have a simular licenceing scheme nothing over 1 liter for first 2 years!

  5. even upping it to 40 would be better, but 50,we would be inviting trouble with some of the people on our roads,no matter how stringent the CBT test was made.

  6. LOL!

Back when I was a learner rider the maximum was 250cc,

and they did a lot more than 50 mph.

I lost a LOT of friends, some their fault, but a lot died through blind car drivers.

And the number of deaths of motorcyclists is why the 125cc, 12bhp limit was set for motorcycles, and mopeds remained by their classification 50cc.

So are you looking to let kids kill themselves?

All they have to do is wait ONE YEAR, and they can get a motorcycle, and say bye bye to the slow lane!

Oh, and the "30", "40", "50"?, "60" or "70"mph roads are the maximum speed you are legally allowed to travel at, it does NOT mean you must travel at the speed indicated.

  7. I agree! Slow speed kills!!!!!

  8. Sorry, but what ever the top speed limit imposed on these mopeds, most riders would drive at that speed, where ever they are. I know some riders are sensible, but the vast majority are complete idiots. You cannot be prosecuted for riding at 30mph in a 50mph speed limit area, the speed limit is the maximum speed you can travel at, not the minimum, which of course gets back to my point of riders going flat out.

  9. the problem with mopeds is the size of the wheels and the amount of control you have over them. because the wheels are so small they make them quite dificult to control, they weave about in high winds and can be quite unstable.

i for one would not want to ride a moped at 50Mph, it would be a death trap and also it would need more than deristricting, the brakes would probably need upgrading as well as possibly slightly larger tyres for extra stability, this would all cost more money.

  10. agree 125%........

  11. I am inclined to agree with you.  However, it's like the L-plate syndrome; whenever someone sees a car with an L-plate, they've just got to overtake, irrespective of the speed of the learner.

Similarly, some drivers will alway try to overtake a moped, whatever the speed.

  12. Restricted mopeds should be restricted to local streets.  The major controlled-access highways should be reserved for cars, trucks, real motorcycles, and unrestricted mopeds.

  13. ban 16 yearolds from riding mopeds and car drivers from riding them with L plates on and thus get rid of pointless dangerous machines. Then anyone who has a full licence can ride at least a 125 motorcycle which is not much more expensive than a moped.

  14. considering most roads in the uk are 30/ then /no

i propose mopeds shouldnt be allowed on roads with

    a limit over 30.

a harder cbt will never make up for actual experiance

  15. Totally agree. restricted two wheelers are dangerous. you are unable to get out of trouble and often due to the nature of the machine it manages to get you into trouble. Speed is not dangerous it is whether or not you have enough common sense to adjust your driving to the conditions at the time. unfortunately lots of drivers are selfish inconsiderate and basically should be banned from driving.now that will be contentious!
