  1. I don't know which country you're in but in Britain there has been a 50% increase in rail passengers over the past 10 years despite rising fares; this is a small crowded country; our roads are congested and of course the train is faster than the plane for almost all trips up to 400 miles - Train goes city centre to city centre; there are no long queues and delays for check in security or extra journeys from airports to town centres. Environmentally trains are far less polluting than cars,

planes and buses and carry far more people. If you are in America many journeys are too long to be practical by train, but in California and on the east coast you have groups of big cities 100 to 400 miles apart; a frequent, efficient high speed rail network in those areas would cut air traffic control delays, pollution and many journey times.

  2. Air travel will become outlawed or curtailed because of enviromental reasons soon enough. Trains are one of the most fuel friendly and I might add safest means of travel in the world.Where else can you travel night and day be served food and meet people and see the country and not be in a hurry or directed like cattle .I just wish Canada had a better and cheaper passenger  rail system.

  3. I love travelling by train. You travel by train, you see the country, you can move around. Planes you get there fast, but being treated like a potential terrorist or herded about like cattle is not for me. I have taken trains in Canada, The United States. England, Italy and loved it. Believe me if I could cross the ocean by train, I surely would.

  4. The people who ride the bullet trains in Japan and Europe would no doubt disagree with you as do I. Why would the French and British Governments spend billions to construct a bullet train tunnel under the Channel between the two countries if they felt train travel was useless. Here in Canada, we are building such a route between Windsor Ontario and Quebec City, a distance of some 2,000 kms. with the train being built bu Bombardier, a well known world wide train maker.(also planes and Ski-doos)

  5. Trains are a more civilised and relaxed way to travel. You see more of the landscape, you don't get cramped leg room and also the food is unlikely to be awful.

I understand the point long distance (e.g. LA to New York) but it is a waste of time taking a plane from Close cities like London to Paris as check in and out is longer than the flights themselves, and the airports are outside the city boundaries. You can get a Eurostar from London city centre to Paris city centre in 2hrs 15mins (17 a day). Flying, check in Driving takes probably 50 mins at least to heathrow if you know London well, Check in at earliest is 1 hr, flight equals 50 mins, check out and into Paris is 1hr. Total Time = 3hrs. % flights a day at most.

Sadly people are also more nervous now of flying thanks to terrorists.

  6. This is a stupid post.

  7. Well, you're right about air travel being the safest mode of transportation. Trains are used today to transport materials that would not easily be transported by some other means. Say you have a freight carrying tons of material to stores across the nation. That weight would not be sustained in an aircraft. Even if it could, air transport would be costly. Also, travelling by train is a great way to take in the scenery. One doesn't usually get to see the countryside or la di da in a plane (well, you do but not up close and in as much detail). Trains are mainly for leisure now. =]]

  8. Well excuse me for disagreeing, but here in the UK rail travel is booming. New rolling stock is being manufactured to cope with demand, not just to replace old life-expired stock.

I presume the question was set from someone in the USA, where the car is king. The problem over there is that gas is cheap and successive US governments have never addressed the imminent problems of gas consumption and its environmental detriments.

Had the US even considered lowering its carbon footprint in the past, the US taxpayers' money might have been spent on building high-speed electric railroads linking important cities, rather than wasting billions of dollars trying to dominate Iraq because it's an oil-producing country.

  9. It's not pointless, trains can go quite fast, especially when put into a vacuum and supported by electromagnets. There was a show on the discovery channel awhile back about creating a trans-Atlantic underwater railway, if I recall correctly it would take about an hour from NY to Europe.

  10. You are 180 out of it. Trains are the future. Have you flown lately. It is one huge hassle. Trains are the way of tomorrow

  11. Are you crazy????

You would destroy the commuter. I live in New Jersey, and see countless trains full of people commuting to New York for work.

Second of all, you can't take a plane to the next town over!!! I take trains all the time, and think that they are a great source of transportation. Its like telling the people of New York City that subways were useless...

Where did you get this hair-brained idea????

  12. As you see, nobody agrees with you.  That is because you are clearly misinformed and thoroughly mistaken.  Rail travel is the way of the future.

Rail travel is more comfortable and much less of a hassle than flying, especially in the neocon paranoia age.  Locomotives can be electrically powered or run on hydrogen or other non-polluting fuels, and will provide much more transportation for the dollar than air or highway travel will do.

And on the train you can meet people, get up and walk around, enjoy a meal in the diner, and sleep in your own bedroom.

And railroad stations are near where you need to go, rather than 40 miles from where you need to go.  It's the way of the future, take our collective word for it.

And tell the person who told you there is no future in rail travel to find out about it.

And ask Jeez if He wants to be involved in your question.
