Copernicus was Polish and lived in the late 1400's -early 1500's.

The pre-Socratic Greek philosophers were the first westerners to propose, discuss and basicallly accept the idea that earth and other heavenly bodies were spheres. By 500BCE it was generally accepted as fact. The 1st Greek philosopher to promote the idea of a spherical earth was probably Anixmander 610-545 bce. He actually made charts/maps of the heavens depicting the planets as spheres. During the "dark ages" this knowledge was lost for a thousand years until the time of Copernicus. Although it can be debated that some still accepted the idea of a heliocentric solar system made up of spheres. The church found this idea to be heresy and would not allow it.

Pythagoras came a little later but he was pre-socratic and can be given credit for promoting the idea as well. His ideas and attempts to explain the universe with mathematics was/is groundbreaking.
