  1. Volleyball originated in the United States; was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, who decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. Instead of the standard net, however, he raised it to be 6 foot 6 inches high, so it was just over the heads of average men.

At the time, Morgan dubbed the game "Mintonette". During one of the demonstration games of the sport, one of the spectators commented the game was more about volleying, and the game's name was changed to Volleyball.
