  1. This is a very old term for Native Americans. It comes from the fact that their skin has a slighly reddish tint. It isn't really red--any more than white people are really white.

According to currently available evidence, the most likely origin of these peoples is that they migrated into North America from northeastern Asia many thousands of years ago.

  2. I'm not sure, maybe fire water. Maybe white man called them that for they were killed or killed. War paint?  Maybe they lived and were born from the red ground. It could be they were actually red skinned. I only answered because I was thinking of the Indians. I find it ironic this question was here.

  3. Recent discoveries in Peru (Monte Verde) & other parts of South America indicate some kind of Native American Civilization was present there 13,500 yrs ago.  This casts some doubt on the hypothesis that all native Americans crossed from Siberia Accross Beringa (the land bridge) during the last ice age. Beringa was more than a small land bridge & was 1000s of kilometers accross before the ocean rose some 60 to 90 meters.

To further complicate the issue, DNA tests indicate native Americans have 5 DNA haplogroups (A,B,C,D & X).  All but haplogroup X are indeed found in east Asia to some degree.  Haplogroup X is not found in East Asia, but is found in Western Europe.  Tests indicate haplogroup X as found in North America & some Eastern Brazilian tribes is ~ 18,000 to 20,000 yrs removed from the Western haplogroup X... thus ruling out recent mixing from West Europeans.

Biology seems to indicate at least 3 & possibly 4 migrations to the Americas happened.  The hypothesis is that, during the glacial maximum, some followed the ice edge, from Western Europe, hunting seals in small boats & made it to North America (most haplogroup X is found in Eastern N. America & Eastern Brazil.)

Many in the Western parts of the Americas are thought to have crossed the Pacific (which had many islands when the water level was lower) in small boats or rafts.  They introduced what appears to be some Pacific Island characteristics.

The North Western & northern Canadian native Americans are indeed of recent Asian extraction, as are the majority of Native Americans.

Now as to the color red... Some North American tribes were thought to have a reddish tint by some Europeans.  One has to look very closely at Eastern Native North Americans to see how they came to this conclusion.

Do a google on "Haplogroup X" if you wish to know more about the DNA make up of Native Americans.  This view of American migrations is gaining more favor as more evidence is uncovered.

  4. They had their name "red Indian" because the first European explorers thought they looked red and also thought they looked quite Indian (like from India) and they also thought that they landed in India (acording to brainpop) Nowdays most people call them "Native Americans".  They originated from what is today a group of Eskimos called the "Inuit", who origionaly came from northeastern Asia. There used to be a large ice sheet that conected from Russia to Alaska called the "Bering land bridge", which has melted away.

There not really red, maby a little, but more brown.
