  1. to add to the above...columbus called them indians because he thought he was in india...you probably already knew that one, but it was the only thing not mentioned...


  2. I agree with Chrispy and Rashid. Columbus thought he arrived in India, thus calling the Native Americans "Indians". We Americans were content to use that term, but the British were more likely to use the term "red Indians" to distinguish them from natives of India, a colony of Great Britain.

They are often also referred to as Native Americans, First Nations and by Christopher Columbus' historical mistake Indians, modernly disambiguated as the American Indian race, American Indians, Amerindians, Amerinds, or Red Indians.

  4. Red Indians are the native inhabitants of North America.  They were so called because earlier settlers perceived a red tinge to their skin.  The term is not used any more.

  5. To add my two cents' worth to the body of knowledge above, it was long used as a term to differentiate between Native Americans and natives of India.
