Madame C.J. Walker.  Born Sarah Breedlove, the daughter of sharecroppers, the first child in the family to have been born free.  She was orphaned at age seven and worked as a laundress in Louisiana when she was still a child, married young, had a daughter at seventeen and was widowed.  She sent her daughter to college with money she had made over the laundry tub.

She invented a hair-restoring tonic and began to market it, gradually built up a company selling beauty products for African American women.  She employed 250,000 black women as commissioned agents selling her products. She stressed economic independence for black women and hired many at all levels in her company.  She was America's first female self-made millionaire.  The very personification of the American Dream.
