Who are health insurance companies accountable to?

In other words, if you have a compliant or need to resort to some legal measure, to whom are some people you can report a given insurance company?

To be specific: the problem is that I was billed for health insurance coverage from a company and never received coverage (in fact I was denied coverage on three different occasion). And It was full health coverage.

How would you classify this problem? Fraudulent?

Much appreciated!

  1. State insurance commissioners.

  2. Insurance companies are (I think) liable to your state's insurance commisioner. For example, I live in California, so I'd need to contact the California Department of Insurance. Do a Google search, or look in the government pages at the front of your area phone book.

  3. You were denied coverage on three different occasion?  That is odd, usually you would only receive one letter of denial.  Did you reapply a second or third time?  What would be there reasons for sending you multiple notices.  Could you have ultimately been approved by the company and thus you received a bill for coverage?  The bill should have the companies '800' number on it and a policy number, you should call and ask about the coverage regarding that account.  If they tell you it is an active policy, tell them you did not receive your insurance cards yet or informational packet.  Ask them to send you another one and send them a check.

When insurance companies deny coverage they usually explain why?  Was their denial a valid reason considering their guidelines for coverage?  You need to examine this further before jumping to the conclusion that you were denied.  Odd, yes, but you must research the bill and see if insurance was ultimately approved.

  4. Why would you pay for coverage you didn't have?  This question is confusing.

  5. call the department of insurance in your state... & make sure the money you paid was actually a premium payment, & not an application fee.

  6. Go to your state's dept of insurance website. You can usually file a complaint online. Have all the pertinent information to include in your complaint. Someone will get back to you rather quickly to address this with you. You might end up having to submit the paperwork and bank records to show you were denied yet still charged. The more info you have to support your complaint the more favorable the outcome will be for you. Good luck!
