Who are on the Australian coins?

Coins have an obverse and reverse design.

On special occasions, some circulating coins will be issued with commemorative designs.  Coins used to feature commemorative designs in circulating currency are the $1 coin, the 50 cent coin and, in rare circumstances, the 20 cent coin.

The obverse side of all Australian decimal coins features the effigy of the reigning monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Five Cent - 'Echidna'

The reverse side depicts a curled up echidna.

Ten Cent - 'Lyrebird'

The reverse side features the lyrebird displaying its beautiful tail feathers.

Twenty Cent - 'Platypus'

The reverse side features the platypus.

Fifty Cent - 'Coat of Arms'

The Australian Coat of Arms unites the six state badges on a central shield.

One Dollar - 'Kangaroo'

The reverse of the one dollar coin features kangaroos.

Two Dollar - 'Aboriginal Tribal Elder'

The design on the reverse of the two dollar coin shows an Aboriginal tribal elder against a background of the Southern Cross constellation and native grass tree plants.

The Obverse side (Heads) has Queen Elizabeth II on it and on the Reverse side (Tails) , most of them are Australian animals (except the 50 cents and $2 coins):
