  1. Saint Radegund, 520-587. captured by the Franks in 531.  married King Clothar of the Franks.  Built a hospital for the poor and nursed lepers at the royal palace.  Around 560 she founded the double monastery of Holy Cross at Poitiers, which became a political and intellectual centre.  Radegund&#039;s achievements as both queen and saint were widely celebrated.

    Brunhilde of Austrasia, c.534-613.  Powerful ruler and church patroness.  She is acknowledged as one of the most powerful figures of 6th century Gaul.   Brunhilde founded a monastery at Autun and routinely corresponded with Pope Gregory concerning church affairs.

    Queen Bertha of Kent. Brought christianity to england.  Bertha was a Frankish Christian princess who married the Pagan King Ethelbert of Kent.  She brought her chaplain with her, and restored a christian church in Canterbury, dedicating it to Saint Martin.  In 601 Pope Gregory sent her a letter of thank, which is still extant.

    Saint Hilda, abbess of Whitby, powerful scholar Abbess.  Saint Hilda was abbess of a double monastery founded at Whitby by EDwin.  Under the rule of Hilda, Whitby became the most noted centre of learning in Britain, and was especially known for the study of the scriptures. Hilda at Whitby was consulted by bishops and royalty from all over europe in important matters of church and state.  She presided over the Synod of Whitby in 664.

    Aethelflaed of Mercia.  Warrior Queen who fought the Danes. c. 870-918.  She was the daughter of King Alfred the Great of Wessex and togher with her husband ruled Mercia jointly until his death in 911, when she became sole ruler.  During their reign Aetheflaed and her husband battled with Danes who had occupied part of Mercian territory.  Her victories were critical to the success of her brother King Edward of Wessex over the Vikings in eastern England.  During her war against the Danes she commanded the captureof the towns of Derby, Leicester, and york, and had taken Wales.  Aethelflaed died in battle against the Danes in 919.

    Saint margaret of Scotland (c.1045-1093) Saint and patroness of Scotland.  Margaret was the queen consort of King Malcolm III canmore of Scotland.  As queen of Scotland margaret used her great influence to reform and protect the interests of the church and to protect the interests of th eEnglish population.

    Matilda of Tuscany(1046-1115).  Ruler in her own right of large areas of northern Italy, she ruled jointly with her mother until the latter&#039;s death in 1076.  She controlled Tuscany, parts of Umbria and Emila-Romagna, and built up the economic strength of the powerful florentine guilds.  A supporter of the papacy against the empire, she recieved henry IB when he came to visit Pope Gregory as a barefoot pentient, but later engaged in warfare with him and financed the papal troops. She eventually made peace with the new emperor.

    Hildegarde of Bingen. 1098-1179.  A major personality of her age .   Nearly all of her works - medical, scientific, theological and correspodence - have been translated into english.  Hildegarde was a nun who became Abbess of Bingen.  She wrote many works of medicine, philosophy, science, and she also composed music which is still sung in churches today.  She was also a visionary and mystic.  

    Empress Matilda.  Daughter of King Henry I of england, she was named his heir when his only legitimate son was drowned.  However, the barons refused to accept her as ruler after henry I died, and instead proclaimed her cousin Stephen King.  Matilda fought Stephen for many years, and eventually they came to a sort of truce, when Stephen agreed to acknowledge Matilda&#039;s son as his heir.  Matilda&#039;s son became King henry II of england.

    Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of henry II, had a long and eventful life, and in her later years was especially active, when she administered england for her son richard I while he was away on crusade, foiled the attempts of his brother John to sezie the throne, and raised the ransom for Richard and delivered it when he was captured by the emperor of Austria.  As a very old lady,s he made the long and arduous journey to Spain to bring back one of her granddaughters to marry the heir to the King of France.

    Marie de France. Well-known poet, whose works were much admired in her own day (c1160-1215) and which are still in print.  Not much is known about her life, but it is believed that she was closely associated with henry II and Eleanor of Aquitane.  Her popularity has continued to the present day.

    Blanche of Castille (1188-1252). .  Granddaughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, acted as regent for her son Louis IX during his minority.  Also acted as regent later when Louis and his wife went on crusade.  Historian Frederick Heer comments &quot;Blanche of Castille impressed her personality on every department of French life in the first half of the 13th century&quot;.  Blanche was a troubadour, the songs she wrote can still be heard today on CD.

    Saint Clare of Assissi (1194-1253) founder of the Poor Clares.  She was a contemporary of Francis of Assissi, and her order emphasised poverty and simplicity.  The order is generally considred the most austere in the Catholic church.  Clare is the Patron saint of television, because when she was dying, she was sad because she was unable to attend Mass, and a vision of the Mass appeared on the wall of her cell.

    Julian of Norwich 1342-1417.  Dame Julian of Norwich is considered one of the major mystic theologians of western Christianity.  Her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love or book of Showings is evaluated in Britannica as &quot;unsurpassed in English mystical literature&quot;.

    Catherine of Sienna (1347-1380).  Major theologian.  She was a Dominican nun who was immensely influential in her day, writing letters to popes, sovereigns, rulers of republics and leaders, as well as to private citizens.  she was politically active throughout her life.

    Christine de Pisan (1364-1431).  The first woman writer knwon to have earned a lving by writing, she wrote numerous books on history, warfare, philosophy, romance, just about everything, including a spirited defense of women.  Her last work was a song in praise of Joan of Arc.

    Joan of Arc (1412-1431) French heroine and soldier.  led the French army at the seige of Orleans and won a famous victory.  Crowned the Dauphin King of France.  Captured and burnt as a heretic and witch by the English.  Patron saint of France.

    These are really just a sample of the many interesting women of this period.  I recommend reading &#039;Daughters of time&#039; for an impressive look aat all sorts of achieving women in history.

    The two time periods are different.  The roman empire and the middle ages are two different periods.  Do you mean the Holy Roman Empire perhaps?  

    Figure out the years you are talking about.
