  1. The Santals (also spelled as Santhal; formerly also Sonthal) are the largest tribal community in India, found mainly in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, and Orissa. There is also a significant Santal minority in neighboring Bangladesh.


  2. Santhals are  tribal people of eastern India, numbering about 5,380,000 in the late 20th century. Their greatest concentration is in the states of Bihar, Jharkand, West Bengal, Assam and Orissa. Some 65,000 also live in Bangladesh and 10,000 in Nepal. Their language is Santhali, a dialect of Kherwari, a Munda language.
