Who are the big MMA stars?

I've just started taking a look at some UFC videos, but I really know nothing about it. Who are the main competitors, the champs, the favourites etc. ?

Your most popular fighters are mostly in the UFC currently.

Here's the top 10 for the casual/new fan:

1-Chuck Liddell, former LHW Champ, mohawk, most fights end in KO

2-Tito Ortiz, former LHW Champ, appeared on Trumps Apprentice show, current girlfriend p**n start Jenna Jameson

3-George St Pierre, current WW champ, one of the most popular sports figure in all Canadian sports.

4-Randy Couture, aka Capt America, Current HW Champ

5-Matt Hughes, former WW champ, "country boy" held UFC title for many years

6- Ken Shamrock, best known from early days of UFC and his  stint in the WWE.

7-BJ Penn, current 155lb champ, the "prodigy", possibly the most talented of all fighters

8-Kimbo Slice, internet fighting sensation, more hype than anything else, but the poster boy of EliteXc

9-Anderson Silva, current Mw champ, possiblt the best p4p fighter today

10-Rampage Jackson, current LHW, current coach on TUF

I listed the above 10 as being most popular to the casual/new fans.  Hardcore fans would of course add the likes of Bas Rutten, Wandy Silva, Fedor, Cro Cop, and Dan Henderson as other big stars.

Rampage, Liddell, Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre are all top UFC guys. Kimbo Slice has become very popular in the MMA world, but he's not in the UFC, nor has he really fought any serious competition.

GSP (Georges St. Pierre), Quentin 'Rampage' Jackson and Anderson Silva are three of the biggest stars in the US. Also there is Chuck Liddel Wanderlei Silva Matt Hughes BJ Penn.

UFC Champs: heavy- Noguiera, lightheavy- Rampage, middleweight- Anderson SIlva, welter- GSP, lightweight- BJ Penn and Sherk will fight to see who is the true champ at 155lbs because they both have claims to the title.

Chuck Lidell is the main man. Off course this point is up for debate but he is really famous and has that big knock out power the people love. George st. Pierre seems to be up there as far as things go though I my home town boy Serra is gonna take him out. ( Fingers crossed)

Basing this answer on popularity only i would have to say Chuck Lidell, GSP, Kimbo, BJ Penn, Randy Couture, and Tito Ortiz.(Jenna helped tito's popularity)

the champs are:

heavyweight-randy couture(wont fight in the ufc again)so the interim champion is Antonio Rodrigo nogueira

light heavy-Quinton rampage Jackson his main competitors are forest Griffin,chuck liddel,loyato machida

middle-Anderson the spider Silva has dominated this division for a while beating the likes of rich Franklin and Dan Henderson who are top fighters.

welter-George st Pierre suffered a shock defeat to Matt Serra last year but avenged it this year. he has rivals like Matt Hughes, john Fitch and Diego Sanchez.

light-bj Penn is scheduled to fight Sean sherk who he has alot of hate for. sherk is his biggest competitor.

other favorites of mine are wandrelei the axe murderer Silva, Tito Ortiz and mike bisping. i could name more but theres just so many top fighters in the ufc.
