  1. The story of Haynes Furniture is a story of entrepreneurial innovation and commitment to the people of Virginia. In 1930, Ellis Strelitz purchased a small furniture store in Norfolk from L.D. Haynes. Joined by his son, Leonard R. Strelitz, and his younger brother, Joseph L. Strelitz, he set out to build Virginia’s biggest furniture store and to revolutionize the furniture industry.

In the late 1950’s, the Strelitz brothers, now President and Executive Vice President of Haynes Furniture, moved the business to the corner of Main and Granby Streets in downtown Norfolk and also acquired a small furniture store in Suffolk which became the second branch of Haynes Furniture. In their ongoing attempt to grow with the times, the brothers purchased yet another furniture company in 1959—the well-established, family-owned Sydnor and Hundley in downtown Richmond.

As more people began shopping in the suburbs and downtown stores in every branch of retailing were phasing out, the Strelitz brothers opened the first of their warehouse-showroom facilities in a huge 100,000 sq. ft. building on outlying Little Creek Road in Norfolk. This was followed by a 200,000 sq. ft. Sydnor and Hundley warehouse-showroom in southside Richmond in the Chippenham Mall.

In the early 1970’s, the Sydnor and Hundley name was dropped and changed to Haynes Furniture. At the same time, the Strelitz family built a 300,000 sq. ft warehouse showroom at one of the most heavily trafficked locations in Tidewater on Virginia Beach Boulevard. The massive and beautifully decorated showroom was the talk of Virginia, offering every style of furniture imaginable along with a tremendous carpet department, displaying hundreds of rolls of carpet and oriental rugs. The Chippenham operation followed suit in decor and content.  With the success of the “mega stores,” Haynes closed its smaller original showrooms and the Little Creek facility, and opened a 100,000 sq.ft. showroom on Mercury Boulevard in Hampton.

Still owned today by the Strelitz family, Haynes continues to revolutionize the furniture industry with the most competitive pricing in the business, astounding selection and a commitment to excellent customer service.
