Who are the people talking on the phones during auctions?

What and why are they talking on the in house phones while bidding for auction items take place? Is it another way of placing a bid?

The people on the phones are employees of the auction house, they are talking to prospective bidders on the item being auctioned and will keep that person informed on what the bid is and place bids for them if they wish.
