The period following World War II, US soldiers returned home from the war and made LOTS of babies. the population of the US increased dramatically.

Children born during this 'baby boom' are called 'boomers'.

Today, they are in their 50's and 60's.

They are the hippies and the me generation from the 1960's and 1970's. Many of them did lots of drugs in their youth. They like to take credit for all kinds of social changes that happened in America during that period.

They see themselves as independent free thinkers. In my area, large numbers of them can be seen expressing their individuality by riding around on practically identical expensive motor cycles wearing practically identical biker leathers, do-rags and sporting shaved heads or white pony tails and white goatee beards. Their bad-boy "Easy Rider" persona evaporates when they play golf or go back to work on Monday. Depending on their age, they may already be retired and golf a lot more than their slightly less old biker buddies.

They also like to drive Chrysler PT-Cruisers or Chevy HHR if they don't have a motorcycle. They like to be thought of as the 'cool grandparents'.
