  1. I think there were more than two. In 1878 Clara Shortridge Foltz became the first woman laywer in California. The same year Martha Angel Dorset began to practise law in Minnesota. In 1879 Belva Lockwood succesfully lobbied Congress to be allowed to appear as a laywer before the Supreme court. By 1900, there were about 300 women lawyers practising in the USA
