French Open: Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander are backing Roger Federer to beat Rafael Nadal

By Clive White in Paris

Two sports legends are backing up Federer in his bid to win the only slam missing in his CV. Wilander said its only because Roger lost motivation to win and Borg says it's Federer's time to win or he just doesnt want Nadal to equal his 4 in a row record in Paris....Baloney, Rafa will win this year and is on his way to surpass the Swiss legend Bjorn...Who are you backing this year?

  1. Well, to each his own. Freedom of expression & of choice as may say. It's the democratic way that sports need be fair & square to all concerned.

    I pick Roger.

    Why?

So that Fed can prove once & for all that he is the new Tennis King at this time & era. For, if he fails in completing the 4 Grand Slams, he can not be called a King anymore whether he keep his #1 post.

  2. Ex legends will say what they like. But I am looking at the present great and legend in Nadal himself. As quote says "action speaks louder than words," Nadal's present game at RG suggests strongly that only he should be crowned the 2008 French Open title. I have a huge doubt that Federer's current performance can crack or hurt Nadal, some of his games were really scrappy and his forehands spraying wide...

  3. Roger Federer. This will be the best time to beat Rafa in clay because if he beats Rafa when he's playing his best tennis, there's no doubt that Roger deserves to win the RG against the best clay courter of this generation if not ever. There will be no excuses for Rafa if and when Roger beats him.

EDIT: dang... roger lost... badly(understatement?). congratulations to rafa. i would still be rooting for him next year. hopefully roger and nadal again in the final and hopefully maybe this time it will go to roger in 5 sets. GO ROGER!!!

  4. I'm backing Federer, because I'm a big fan of him.

  5. Nadal.

  6. Yeah I'm a Federer fan, but the head to head and numbers are on Nadal's side.

  7. Wow, I can't believe Borg said he doesn't want Rafa to equal his 4 straight FO record.  Same thing happened when Sampras was trying to equal his 5 straight Wimby back in 01'.  Borg actually called Federer to thank him after Roger beat Pete that year.  I think that's very stupid of Borg.  As much as I like Borg's game, give it up Bjorn.  Record is meant to be broken, not kept.  I am rooting for Rafa :)

  8. federer........ may b even nadal..... i m nt sure as they both r great specially federer

  9. Federer, obviously

  10. you're right, bjorn borg might have those thoughts in mind when he said that federer will be the greatest if he wins the FO and wanted him to win it. of course, we might just be reading too much about his motives.  I like Roger and I wanted to win this clay GS but i need to be very objective as well.  the way Rafa played this year's RG, i don't think Federer will match him to win the crown the fourth time. So, its going to Nadal still. Oh, how i love that match when he humliated Novak in straight sets

  11. Borg also backed Federer to win RG LAST year .  uuhh.... I backed Nadal to win and guess whose prediction proved to be right?

  12. nadal

  13. I really can't decide!

On the one hand, I really want Federer to win the only grand slam he hasn't won.  I'm a Federer fan, and I really feel for him when he doesn't get to hold the winner's trophy!

On the other hand, I like Nadal too because he's an excellent tennis player as well, and he also seems like a really nice guy.  While I want Federer to complete his collection, I think I would also feel for Nadal if he should fail to defend his title and tie Borg's record.  :(

Sigh, I don't know.  Either way, I would be happy for the winner, and I would feel bad for the runner-up...

  14. I realllllly want Fed to win!!!

But I just can't see it happening, Nadal's played outstanding tennis in this tournament.

  15. Who wants to bet with me?

I'll go for Roger Federer (predicted to be the greatest player in this sport).

  16. I'm for Nadal in this one. I just don't see anyone stopping him in this grand slam. Though Federer might push him to work harder for the title, I think he will still win.

As for the legends who are backing Fed up, they both know what nadal is capable of and should not take this for granted. I even thought they were backing Nadal up because of there statements. Borg said that Nadal will equal his record and if Roger was to win he would have to fight the match of his life: a 5 setter final against nadal. We all have our picks, but I believe the title will remain nadal's.

Here are Borg and Wilander's positive statement about Nadal:

  17. Federer, it's really just a gut feeling, and the other day my mom said that Fed would win and usually if she says something will happen, it always does, LMAO. But I won't dismiss Nadal's almost legendary playing this year at Roland Garros, he's been phenomenal! Though the cards say Nadal, my gut gives the edge to Federer because he's struggled allot this year and people have pounced all over him so honestly it's almost like Federer has something to prove to his critics and to himself that he's not through yet and he'll go out there and play his heart out and let his raquet do the talking and he'll leave out there on the court when it's all said and done. Roger really has never looked better on clay this year than any other, since working with Jose he's become more natural. If he wins he will go down as the greatest tennis player of all time, and it's just Federer's time.

But if Rafa wins I'll be happy because he's extremely amazing and he's a good guy too. Last year I actually chose Rafa, but this year I pick The Fed.

  18. I really want Federer to win... but I don't think he will this year, Nadal seems tough to beat this Roland Garros.

  19. Federer all the way!!!
