  1. Sir Don

  2. Arthur Shrewsbury is my one all-time favourite cricketers. Shrewsbury was one of the greatest batsman of the 1880s/1890s, and is considered the greatest professional batsman of the 19th century.

Shrewsbury played 23 Tests for England, captaining his country seven times, he was the first to reach 1,000 Test runs and rattled up three centuries - two of them on Lord's stickies.

For his home county, Nottinghamshire, Shrewsbury scored nearly 20,000 first-class runs over a 27-year period. Seven times topping the English county batting averages, with a best season in 1887 when he set a then record average of 78.71. In 1902, at the age of 46, he topped the averages for the final time and there were some calls for a return to the national team.

However Shrewsbury suffered a number of health problems in early 1903 which doctors couldn't diagnose. Believing this to be an incurable disease he committed suicide on the 19th May 1903.

Shrewsbury was a quiet and shy man who was modest about his cricketing abilities, believing himself to be a more successful businessman. But he should be considered one of England's greatest opening batsman.
