Don't get me wrong I loved "Angels and Demons" & "The Da Vinci Code" but they are the same!

Same sequence of events, relatively same plot and quite frankly they are just commercial. I touched no literary value.

  1. I'm not sure I know enough to make a valid guess

Even though I did indeed read the book

  2. The books had more of a symbolic value because everything mentioned in both books had a reference to something in history and in the present.

I love both books as well. However, I feel both have more of a YA voice than an adult voice. I love YA, don't get me wrong, but it might be because the characters sometimes act like teenagers than adults in a lot of cases.

Hmm...but I disagree with how you say they are the same. In symbolism, yes, but in plot, not. Blowing up Vatican City and trying to find the Holy Grail are completely different things. We might as well pick on National Treasure and National Treasure 2 if we're going to compare similarity of plots.

  3. The biggest hypocrite at the moment is actually James Frey, for publishing a fake memoir.

  4. It really depends on what you're looking for in a book. If you're looking for character development or something with "literary value" (whatever that means) then you'll find his books pretty dull. But if you can put that aside and just enjoy the mystery, excitement, suspense, story, etc... they really are AMAZING books.

And you've really got to envy Dan Brown for embracing and sharing his own personal writing style.

As to the plot, I really don't see how they're the same. Although both go into the depths of religion, A&D has a lot of science in it and DVC has much more arts and history.

PS thank you for asking this question because I've never really thought about this before.

  5. Now, see, I disagree. I was completely riveted, and I'm pretty picky. Let's be realistic. He found a niche and he's exploiting it to the tune of millions. And he's good, unlike many other best selling novelists I could name. What is really important is he draws the reader into the amazing synchronicity that shocks the critical thinker every day. I just saw a movie that blatantly stole part of the plot from Digital Fortress (Live Free or Die Hard). To be stolen from is the best compliment.

  6. I've always found him mediocre a best.  no flair

  7. I don't quite see how that makes him a hypocrite.

But yes, his books (while amazingly researched) are very flat, with no real character development or conflict.

  8. Dan Brown generates millions from his books because they were controverisial and nothing else. If they weren't controverisal, Brown would probably be down on the streets.

  9. I don't think so.

Bombing the Vatican and interpreting the works of DaVinci don;t really strike me as the same thing...
