  1. according to glenn beck, a member of the carnegie family (like carnegie hall) invented an FM radio in the early 20's, but didnt relese it to the public, because not enough of the country owned AM radios at the time. once nearly everyone owned AM, they released the FMs to the public. i cannot find this in print, but there is a book about american inventors from the early 1900's that he got his information from.

  2. most people agree that edwin h. armstrong was the inventor.  Ken Burns did a documentary on PBS called "Empire of the Air" there is a companion book as well, detailing the triumphs and struggles of the 'men' who made radio.  the most interesting aspect is how sarnoff tried to supress FM, b/c he was still making money from AM - and he also wanted TV to be the next big thing, not FM.  of course this was short sighted in that FM audio was the preferred method for audio for TV - and also radio easily survived alongside the TV invention.  then again, sarnoff also predicted nuclear power stations in all of our basements by now.  can't be right all the time.

  3. I just found this out myself when I was at Ft. Monmouth, NJ for some training. The training facility (Armstrong Hall) is named after Edwin Howard Armstrong, who in 1933 invented the first FM radio.

  4. The radio was invented before FM broadcasting.   The FM broadcasting technology was invented by Edwin Howard Armstrong.
