Who came up with the idea of "born here/legal here" even if parents are illegal?

Who was the dumbass that wrote into law that if you are born here than you are automatically a US citizen regardless of the immigration status of the parents?

Which politician or politicians came up with that BS?

Anyone know the background of how and where and when this was all set in motion?

  1. Yes, its called the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.  

    1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

    At the time the amendment was made law, there was no such thing as illegal immigration.  Furthermore, at that time the residency period before somebody could become a naturalized citizen was only two years.

    With the exception of laws preventing Chinese immigration, there was no significant restrictions on immigration to the USA until the 1920s. 1921 is when the national quota system was introduced.  In the 19th century, if you weren't Chinese, you could just immigrate to the USA and become a citizen very quickly.  That is part of the context of the 14th Amendment.

    The intent of the framers is express and clear, as recorded in the May 30, 1866 edition of the Congressional Globe. Senator Jacob Howard, author of the clause, said, "This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers ...".

I think it's a d**n good amendment, this way you can have more people coming in having more kids that because they are United States Citizens if born here, must contribute taxes (even though many of their undocumented parents already do pay taxes in anticipation that maybe one day they will be legalized and could use it to their advantage). Maybe with all of this new workforce coming, social security won't collapse because of aging boomers.

    So the next time you see some people who you THINK might illegal, (there's no way for you to know by outward appearance, just your conceptions) thank them and encourage them to have more children. Do your research before regurgitating Limbaugh/Dobbs/Beck.
