Im filling in an application form for a college and it needs a reference at the bottom. It says if you have left school within two years this should be your head teacher.

Problem is I left school over two years ago so I cant do that! And Ive never had a job. I did attend college a few months ago but i dropped out before my exams so I cant really get a reference from any of my old lecturers.

So who the heck can I get a reference from !!? What types of people can give a reference? And do I have to ask them for a reference.. or can i just write down their name, address and telephone number..?

Please help me with this if you can.

  1. People who have known you for years and can attest to your credibility.

  2. Well since you have no other options it should be ok to put a person that knows you who wasn't a teacher or employer. Is there someone you know, for instance a family friend, that has known you for a while and can give you a positive reference? I wouldn't list a relative, or one of your friends, but an older family friend or someone from your community that you know, like a neighbor or from church etc. should be ok since you don't have other options like employers.

I personally would check with them first, just ask if you can list them as a reference, like to be polite... but you don't absolutely have to do that, lots of people don't.

  3. You can ask a teacher from your high school, even if it's been more than two years.  That's probably the best way to go - none of us can write you a reference.
