I would like to write a fantasy story. I have so many ideas in my head it's hard to get them down on paper. So if anyone has any ideas, maybe it would help. It could be about mermaids, werewolves, vampires, whatever. Thanks! :D

  1. I'm going to try to say as little as necessary about fantasy and fantasy stories in particular.  Pay attention.

Most fantasies really are either melodramas or adventure stories.  This puts them in the category of well-made play.  That is, since the nineteenth century there has been a specific formula for writing TV, plays, popular novels and so forth, which you should take both your ideas and your impressions of ideas and put them down on paper with.

Act One introduces everything:  the protagonist (hero or heroine), his or her acquaintances, and friends, the conflict, the villain  or villains.  It might open with the action already underway, in which case through exposition you will give whatever background is necessary to understand it.  Otherwise, though, show don't tell.  Describe your scene and the actions, rather than simply narrating it.  You might close with the first direct confrontation between the protagonist and his or her antagonists.  It shouldn't resolve anything, but it is nice if the protagonist comes out on top this time.

Act Two, you develop the conflict, USING the characters settings and props introduced in Act One.  The conflict deepens at this point, as the plans of the antagonists are developed.  This section should close with another confrontation.  And this confrontation should probably include the most damage of all the meetings.  At  the end, the protagonist should not come out clearly on top, however, he or she should be in a position to deal with any shortcomings, be they ignorance, personal failings or lack of resources which have prevented resolution of the problem.

Act Three: whatever I might have suggested above, this should open with the protagonist in a desperate state.  However, he or she should have a methodology at least to be able to thwart the bad guys.  The bad guys should be out to thwart this, however they should fail just before the final confrontation.  The climax should be the moment just before the final confrontation when your protagonist finally achieves whatever he or she needs to defeat the bad guys.  The physical climax should follow the story or emotional climax.

Denouement:  The loose ends are wrapped up and you find out what happened to the characters.

William Goldman, a great novelist who wrote many important screen plays, said that the form of a screenplay or such an adventure story is as precise as a sonnet.  And this is often very true.  If you really want to learn to write fantasy, take your ideas and SCRAPS of ideas -- don't worry if what you are writing down feels wrong -- plug them into this format and develop them with them.  If you want to try a short story, after you have outlined a plot according to this formula, start halfway through act 3 and stop just BEFORE the physical climax with the real climax of the story.

Surprisingly, rather than putting a straightjacket on your imagination, what this will do is force you to work with those ideas which have previously eluded your grasp.  You will find as you do this, you will change your method to one you are most comfortable with.  The result will be that eventually you will be addressing the ideas in your head without any mediation whatsoever.

    Try it.

Let me ask you: what sort of confrontation would a mermaid get into?  With a modern fishing trawler, perhaps?

  2. a mermaid who is given the chance to live on land but only for a short while for her to find love or else she stays a mermaid forever,

theres also a vampire thats also looking for true luv and in same situation as mermaid.

but since none of them are able to admit who they really are, they can't truly trust each other, will they be able to find that trust before its too late?

  3. i write stories too! they are young adult romance. i mostly write about myself having wings, being a mermaid, and of course having a boyfriend and someone else fighting over me. i makes a great story

  4. Here is my idea of how all mythological creatures died out.

Chuck Norris forms the Roundhouse club. And he invites all the mythological creatures. With one swift kick, he kills them all, ending the lives of all mythological creatures.

  5. For fun, a young woman posts on a message board asking how to become a mermaid.  Among the silly answers there's one that seems to be true, but it sounds very dangerous.  She forgets about it until she is seemingly betrayed by the one she loves.  Despairing, she remembers the mermaid answer and decides to try it out, not caring whether she lives or dies.

Instead of drowning (as would happen in real life), she turns into a mermaid and frolics in the depths of the ocean.  The oceans of all the worlds are magically linked, so she gets to travel to realms of wonder and beauty.  She soon learns that not all is right in the mermaid world, and has to engage in dream battles (that are more about creativity than violence - like a poetry slam) to overcome various unsavory characters.  She, of course, becomes a superlative dream warrior and eventually marries the prince of all the oceans.

Blissfully happy, she one day happens to observe the suffering of her childhood friends, and is torn about whether to return to the mundane world to help them.  In the end she decides to return.  The prince tries to stop her (for ungallant reasons - he just wants her powers), but she makes the return with the help of the person who seemingly betrayed her, but didn't really betray her and who loves her as well.  Together they teach people to become dream warriors and make the world a better place.

  6. Chuck Norris..... HAHAHHAHAHA!

Ok. My story is a lonely girl that has had her heart broken and she has been cynical about men for 5 years so she finally tries to cope with her situation sometimes she cries herself to sleep at night... Until one day she runs to an antique store and finds interest in some rusty old oil lamp

then when she gets home she slides her hands across the lamp to feel the rough texture and the ancient writing then he unleashes a genie.... Hes 2000 years old and ..... a hot Japanese guy. He tries to open her eyes to see that life isn't so cold and harsh and even shows her something she never had before... love. You can come up with a villain or something... i just lit the torch the rest I'm sure you will be fine...

    -Bye!
