  1. If you go to http://www.hud.gov/apps/section8/index.c... you can search for low income apartments.  The way this works is very similar to getting section 8, exceopt that instead of you getting a voucher the apartment itself has the voucher.  The apartment buildings are all individually owned and managed, but the rent is subsidized through the government.  There are apartments specifically for people who are considered disabled either mentally or physically; since you're on SSI, you qualify.  They charge you 30% of your income and utilities are all included in the price of your rent, though you need to be able to have them turned on in your name.  Each building has some variations on their rules for admission, but they do stringent criminal background checks, so if you have a felony record, you may want to call the individual buildings to see how far back they check.  Also to know is that they go based on when you came off of parole/probation/release from jail, whichever came LAST.  If you're currently on probation or parole, forget it.  Also, they do check your credit, but it's usually just to see if you have been evicted and if so, do you still owe money for that; if you have evictions, but you don't owe money on them, you should be okay.  I'm not sure where you live, but in Cleveland, some of the buildings have up to a 12 month waiting list, but I tell people to put in ther applications anyway, because 12 months from now when they call you, you may still need them.  It's probably way less in your area, anyway, so I wouldn't sweat it.  You can also scontact the public housing authority in your area, which you can also find through the www.hud.gov site.  Hope this helps, but I know how complicated the system can seem if you're not used to it.  Email me if you have any questions, or if something I've said wasn't clear.

  2. SSI isn't enough by itself usually, are you able to get Disability as well?  You're going to have to pay rent whereever go and with that utilities, gas if you have a car, and groceries then your miscellanious spending for whatever hobbies you have. So first you need to make a budget with what SSI provide you with now. Then call up your local  housing authority and go in for an interview to see if they can help you on your budget. Ask them if there are any low level income apartments or apartments set up to accept a percentage of govenment benefites. Best of luck to you. I'm fully disabled and I know how rough it is. My husband and I both are, but he is able to work thank God. It is almost impossible to make it nowadays in this world without extra income.

Good luck and God bless, Pami

  4. There is also Public Housing along with Section 8.  Section 8 has a waiting list of upto 1-2 years.  Were Public Housing is based on your income also and no waiting list most of the time.

2-1-1 is an easy to remember telephone number that connects callers to information about critical health and human services available in their community.

2-1-1 reaches approximately 196 million people (over 65% of the total U.S. population) in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Yet, millions of Americans still need to be connected.

  5. well you can try getting housing assistance from HUD.  But that can take a while, and from what I hear can be really a hassle to be on Section 8 housing.   Do you get disability too or just SSI?  not sure what your situation is.  I don't know how much you make on SSI and that isnt my business.  But doesn't sound like a lot.

Not sure what else to say... sorry.... I am on disability, but still had a job when I got this apartment.  It is month to month disability checks for me to live or I put iton a credit card and then go deeper into debt.

  6. I don't know where you are but some shelters and missions help with that. I believe.
