Question

We have recently put our washing machine in the outhouse. We have connected the water pipes and everything is in working order but we are wondering if we can put the waste water pipe down the drainpipe grid which also takes the rainwater from the gutters or do we have to run it into the grid from the kitchen waste pipe?

It's OK to run rain water into a waste water pipe, but do not run waste water into a rain or surface water pipe. These run to rivers land drains, waste water drain run to water cleansing plants.

Rain water, waste water and soil water (from WC units and urinals  in toilets )  pipes are normally run seperately..The Rain water is not contaminated  by domestic chemicals but  waste water lines (from kitchen sinks ,wash basins, showers , washing machines etc) are.If the chemicals are bio degradable and, if  there is no   other simpler way, I think you can connect  the washing machine waste water to rain water down pipe.Make sure however the Washing machine water is   not run in an open drain which can happen  depending  on the the  Rainwater drain design ,

I used to have my water from washing machine to go out side.  Unfortunately, and don't ask me how they knew, but the council came round and told me I was polluting the river by letting my water run into the waste pipe. Consequently I had to put the waste pipe under the sink, for the water to go out through the kitchen waste pipe.  Just thought I'd better warn you. I don't want you to get into trouble.

You most certainly should NOT run the waste water from your washing machine into the storm drains that carry away the water from the gutters. That water is generally fed directly into the environment and you most certainly will be polluting the waters with excesses of nitrogen that will greatly upset the natural balance.

Run the waste from your washer into the sewage waste line, that will get treated at a water treatment plant and the harmful chemicals removed.

Our waterways are already taking a beating from excess nitrogen contained in storm water runoff that comes from all of the fertilizers used on lawns and for farming.

Your rain water down pipe may lead to a soak away and not to a proper drain if this is so after a while it would start to smell also it would not be able to cope wioth the amount of water that a washing machine throws out, but if you can confirm that the rain water goes into the same drain as your dirty household water i cant see any problem.

Strickly speaking you should use the gulley serving  the kitchen.

Your rainwater may go to a soakaway, depending on the age of the property. Waste water would tend to foul this up eventually.

Depends if your drain is WASTE ie sewer, or SERFACE you cannot put any think other than surface water down this drain, that means gutters or what runs off your land, as this water gets treated differently at process plants. I know people do but if your caught by the environmental agency its a heavy fine.

shouldnt make any difference as it will all lead to the same place....and my washer water goes down the same drainpipe grid as the gutters btw
